Dear Colleagues, This is to announce the " AIDS in India: A Workshop-Symposium on Research, Trials and Treatment " to be held between 21st July 2002 to 27th July 2002 and jointly organized by The AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), Bronx, New York, the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Sir Dorabji Tata Centre for Research in Tropical Diseases, Bangalore and Jawaharalal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. Applications are invited from interested individuals (basic and clinical AIDS researchers as well as clinicians who regularly treat AIDS patients) to participate in this 1-week Workshop-Symposium to be held at the Indian Institute of Science Campus, Bangalore. See below for instructions on how to apply. The workshop includes three components. A. " Hands-on " course: Will impart experience in using techniques covering several key virological and immunological methods including (a) Use of lentiviral vectors for gene delivery; ( Measurement of drug susceptibility in HIV; © Heteroduplex Mobility shift Assay (HMA); (d) Use of reporter HIVs; (e) CTL assays using tetramers; (f) ELISPOT assay and (g) Luciferase assay to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The teaching faculty will include several leading researchers from both India and US. B. Round-table discussion series: These are 2- to 5- session series covering basic-to-advanced aspects of: (a) AIDS Research in India; ( Ethics in Clinical Research; © Antiretroviral treatment modalities and (d) Design of Clinical Trials. The panelists are leading researchers from USA and India. C. Symposium: A two-day event on 22nd and 23rd July includes plenary lectures and seminars, with separate sessions for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis as an opportunistic infection of AIDS. Those who are actively involved in bench research (basic and/or clinical) can apply for 'Full participant' who will take part in all three components of the workshop-symposium. Clinicians or scientists who are involved in clinical research or AIDS therapy can apply for 'Partial participant' and will take part in the symposium and the round table discussions only. Applications must include: complete biographical sketch (CV), a one-page description of your personal objectives in AIDS prevention effort/research in India and how this workshop will aid in fulfilling those goals. Priority will be given to applicants who are part of ongoing research efforts and those with significant experience and/or strong potential for AIDS prevention research in India. Selected applicants will be informed before June 15, 2002. A limited number of candidates will be eligible for housing near IISc. The number of total participant slots available is limited - therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply at their earliest convenience.
