Guest guest
UN praises Kenya for meeting HIV/Aids report deadline Published on March 17, 2008, 12:00 am By Mangoa Mosota Kenya has been commended by a UN agency for meeting a deadline to report on progress made against HIV/Aids, despite post-election violence. UNAids said that Kenya was among countries that met the January 31 deadline to send responses for the agency's reporting system. Every two years, in compliance with the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/Aids signed by UN member states in 2001, countries report to UNAids on progress made in the response to the epidemic. " This year, countries and individuals showed extraordinary commitment to this reporting process, " said the statement. The agency said Kenya had gone to extraordinary lengths to submit the reports on time. " While post-election civil unrest beset Kenya, civil society and staff of Government ministries risked their lives by continuing to travel to their offices during riots, to complete their report, " the agency said. According to the report, prepared by the National Aids Control Council (NACC), HIV/Aids prevalence has halved in a decade. The most recent modelling of surveillance data indicates that prevalence stood at 5.1 per cent among adults at the end of 2006, compared to 10 per cent in 1997/98. NACC said the turnaround was attributed to greater awareness and behaviour change. http://www.eastandard.net/news/? id=1143983421 & cid=4 & PHPSESSID=fd4ba9910ae8e90da50cb3b24a226d64
