5k / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long Island, June 22

June 18, 2008

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Chifu and all Kenyans: 100% of the money collected from registration fees from Kenyan participants will go directly to KCA to be distributed to AIDS projects in Kenya. I would like you, Chifu, to collect the registration money for all Kenyan participants and then turn the money over to me. Please send a post to the various African discuusion groups as to how much money was collected. The first $150 will go towards providing funds for Hezekiah's pharmacy. The next $200 will go to Planet Poz for the Little Lambs, the next $1,000 will go towards the orphan dinner at Hezekiah's place the evening before the World AIDS Marathon. The remaining money, if additional money is raised will be sent to KCA for worthy projects in Kenya as determined by KCA. This will also include any contributions sent to my foundation by Kenyans living in America. Such contributions would need to be received by June 26, 2008. Chifu, I will see you this evening, but this offer relies on your counting the money. Otherwise, you will have to trust my counting.
The M. Brodsky Foundation, a 501© 3 public charity, would like to announce its first annual 5K / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in America to be held on June 22, 2008. The start will be at 9 AM and all participants must arrive no later than 8:30 AM to Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, New York. I, Brodsky, am HIV+, a brain cancer survivor and a marathon runner. Every year my wife, Jodi, and I travel to Kenya where my Foundation sponsors the Kisumu, Kenya World AIDS Marathon, see photos which Jodi and I participate in. The 5K local event will give my Foundation a chance to help not just AIDS sufferers in Kenya, but people living with HIV & cancer in Long Island and America as well.
In addition to the run, there will be AIDS testing by Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, Long Island Association for AIDS Care and Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition. Cancer testing, mammographies and colorectal screening will be provided by Nassau University Medical Center. The AIDS testing is free and will be offered between 10 AM and 4 PM. The mammography testing is free if you do not have health insurance and will be available between 10 AM and 2 PM. Otherwise, the patient would be required to submit her health insurance and a doctor's referral and pay any co-payments not covered for a mammography. Sadly, the mammography van had a breakdown and I was told today, June 20th, the van will not be onsite on June 22nd. However, women who want to have a mammography at the same price as noted in this paragraph will be given appointments on June 22nd by the group that is handling the colorectal screening. Free colorectal screening using a take home stool test will be offered to uninsured women over 50 years of age. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Long Island Ovarian Cancer Education, Advocacy, Networking and Support, a group of ovarian cancer survivors will also be present to promote ovarian cancer awareness and distribute literature.
Hope for Stroke, an organization devoted to educating and helping stroke survivors about how to get their life back together and move forward in a positive direction will also be present to distribute literature and answer questions. Understanding the warning signs of a person having a stroke and what must be done immediately to minimize the effect of the stroke will also be discussed by Hope for Stroke.
To learn more about the events of the day, to register for the 5K / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk, or to make a donation, please visit the 5k website. Donations can also be mailed to the Foundation address as noted above or sent by PayPal via the Foundation website as noted below. Online registration is $22; race day registration is $25. T-shirts will be provided to the first 300 participants. Special Thanks to the following:
-SEAFORD BOY SCOUT TROOP #239 for volunteering on race day.-SEAFORD HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS for singing our National Anthem at the start of the race.-FRESH 102.7 FM for playing music at the 5K Event and giving away T-shirts and cds.-SCHNEIDER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL for permitting the Foundation to collect and donate toys to in-patient children at the Pediatric Hematology Unit at Schneider Children's Hospital. For further information about which toys are acceptable and how to donate toys, please contact me, Brodsky, by phone at 516-770-7724 Toys must be received by the M. Brodsky Foundation, 1247 Mara Court, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509 by June 19th, 3 PM as the toy delivery to Schneider Children's Hospital has been scheduled for June 20th, 11 AM.
40% of the net proceeds will remain in Long Island and will go towards helping people living with HIV and cancer. Items such as shampoos, laundry detergent, dish soap, deodorant, cologne or perfume, tissues, toothbrushes, toothpaste, band-aids, coffee cups, soap and any free samples that people and corporations will donate will be given to those people living with HIV and cancer. Planned Parenthood of Nassau County will also be dispensing condoms at the event. The four AIDS and cancer testing organizations receiving assistance in Long Island are Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and the Nassau University Medical Center. The balance of the net proceeds raised will go to AIDS and cancer projects in America (10%) and Africa (50%), as noted on the Foundation website, foundation website.
For more information about the foundation's mission and the World AIDS Marathon, please visit the Foundation and marathon websites, foundation website and marathon website.
To reach Cedar Creek Park by train, take a train from Penn Station to Wantagh, 6:39 AM or 7:13 AM (arriving 7:36 and 8:07, change trains at Jamaica station) and follow instructions as per link, here's the link to Cedar Creek Park. This link has info about the 4.4 mile bicycle, running, jogging trail to Beach from Cedar Creek Park. There are also buses from the Wantagh Railroad Station to Beach. The distance from the Wantagh station to Cedar Creek Park is about 1.25 miles so you would need to walk briskly to make it to the start. The pedestrian entrance to the park is at Merrick Road and Larch Street and the sign up for the Event is near the tennis courts. If you are traveling by car, the closest address to the park is 3381 Merrick Road, Seaford, New York. The main entrance to the park will be closed and you will need to take the Wantagh Parkway to Merrick Road eastbound. Proceed 1/4 mile to the park and then proceed four blocks east of the main entrance and then turn south at Cedar Street to enter the park.
I would also like to thank Senator Barack Obama, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray for their support for the Foundation's work which includes its annual World AIDS Marathon held in Kisumu, Kenya as well as the 5K / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in America. These letters can be read by visiting the website link, see letters
On behalf of all people living with HIV, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our local AIDS activists and politicians who fought to have White funding restored to its correct level. On April 28th 2008, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Suffolk and Nassau Counties which will restore more than $1,000,000 in White Funding to Long Island. Previous legislation by the U.S. Department Health and Human Services found Long Island ineligible for vital funding due to a technicality. The year long litigation to restore Long Island's funding status has brought hope and increased strength for HIV/AIDS patients and those who stand for them. The suit against HHS was led by Nassau County Executive R. Suozzi, Congressman Steve Israel, Nassau and Suffolk Health Departments, County Attorney offices and the United Way of Long Island.
See you Sunday at the start.
> [5k AIDS Cancer Survive Run Walk] 5k / AIDS / Cancer / Survive /
> Run / Walk Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long Island, June 22
> June 18, 2008
> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To Chifu and all
> Kenyans: 100% of the money collected from registration fees from Kenyan
> participants will go directly to KCA to be distributed to AIDS projects
> in Kenya. I would like you, Chifu, to collect the registration money for
> all Kenyan participants and then turn the money over to me. Please send
> a post to the various African discuusion groups as to how much money was
> collected. The first $150 will go towards providing funds for Hezekiah's
> pharmacy. The next $200 will go to Planet Poz for the Little Lambs, the
> next $1,000 will go towards the orphan dinner at Hezekiah's place the
> evening before the World AIDS Marathon. The remaining money, if
> additional money is raised will be sent to KCA for worthy projects in
> Kenya as determined by KCA. This will also include any contributions
> sent to my foundation by Kenyans living in America. Such contributions
> would need to be received by June 26, 2008. Chifu, I will see you this
> evening, but this offer relies on your counting the money. Otherwise,
> you will have to trust my counting. The M. Brodsky Foundation,
> a 501© 3 public charity, would like to announce its first annual 5K /
> AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in America to be held on June 22,
> 2008. The start will be at 9 AM and all participants must arrive no
> later than 8:30 AM to Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, New York.
>
> I, Brodsky, am HIV+, a brain cancer survivor and a marathon
> help not just AIDS sufferers in Kenya, but people living with HIV &
> cancer in Long Island and America as well.
>
> In addition to the run, there will be AIDS testing by Planned
> Parenthood of Nassau County, Long Island Association for AIDS Care and
> Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition. Cancer testing, mammographies and
> colorectal screening will be provided by Nassau University Medical
> Center. The AIDS testing is free and will be offered between 10 AM and 4
> PM. The mammography testing is free if you do not have health insurance
> and will be available between 10 AM and 2 PM. Otherwise, the patient
> would be required to submit her health insurance and a doctor's referral
> and pay any co-payments not covered for a mammography. Sadly, the
> mammography van had a breakdown and I was told today, June 20th, the van
> will not be onsite on June 22nd. However, women who want to have a
> mammography at the same price as noted in this paragraph will be given
> appointments on June 22nd by the group that is handling the colorectal
> screening. Free colorectal screening using a take home stool test will
> be offered to uninsured women over 50 years of age. I sincerely
> apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Long Island Ovarian
> Cancer Education, Advocacy, Networking and Support, a group of ovarian
> cancer survivors will also be present to promote ovarian cancer
> awareness and distribute literature. Hope for Stroke, an organization
> devoted to educating and helping stroke survivors about how to get their
> life back together and move forward in a positive direction will also be
> present to distribute literature and answer questions. Understanding the
> warning signs of a person having a stroke and what must be done
> immediately to minimize the effect of the stroke will also be discussed
> by Hope for Stroke. To learn more about the events of the day, to
> register for the 5K / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk, or to make a
> donation, please visit the 5k website
> %2Fwww.worldaidsmarathon.com%2Fsupport.html & id=preview> On behalf of
> all people living with HIV, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our
> local AIDS activists and politicians who fought to have White
> funding restored to its correct level. On April 28th 2008, the U.S.
> Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Suffolk and Nassau
> Counties which will restore more than $1,000,000 in White Funding
> to Long Island. Previous legislation by the U.S. Department Health and
> Human Services found Long Island ineligible for vital funding due to a
> technicality. The year long litigation to restore Long Island's funding
> status has brought hope and increased strength for HIV/AIDS patients and
> those who stand for them. The suit against HHS was led by Nassau County
> Executive R. Suozzi, Congressman Steve Israel, Nassau and Suffolk
> Health Departments, County Attorney offices and the United Way of Long
> Island.
> See you Sunday at the start.
