Guest guest
5k / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long Island, June 22, 2008 (photo, courtesy of Greater Long Island Running Club) June 30, 2008 Plans are underway for a 2009 5k AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The M. Brodsky Foundation, a 501© 3 public charity, sponsored its first annual 5k / AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long Island on June 22, 2008. Plans are already underway for a follow-up Event on June 21, 2009. I, Brodsky, President of the M. Brodsky Foundation, am HIV+, a brain cancer survivor and a marathon runner. Every year my wife, Jodi, and I travel to Kenya where my Foundation sponsors the Kisumu, Kenya World AIDS Marathon, see pictures which Jodi and I participate in. The 5K local event will give my Foundation a chance to help not just AIDS sufferers in Kenya, but people living with HIV & cancer in Long Island and America as well. Back in 1997 I was diagnosed with HIV and five years later in 2002, I was diagnosed with brain cancer and given only 2 - 4 years to live. I made a promise to myself and anyone else who was listening that if my life was spared I would do everything to help people who were less fortunate than me. I would like to thank the following groups for helping me keep my promise. Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ for sending an AIDS testing mobile unit to the Event so people could receive free AIDS testing and counseling between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Planned Parenthood also set up tables to distribute literature about their organization and they gave away free condoms as well. For more information about free AIDS testing and counseling from Planned Parenthood you can contact them at 516-750-2500 or 2600. Long Island Association for AIDS Care (LIAAC) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Long Island Association for AIDS Care (LIAAC) sent an AIDS testing mobile unit to the Event and provided AIDS testing and counseling between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. If anyone would like to know more about the AIDS services offered by LIAAC, they can contact LIAAC at 1-877-TO-LIAAC. If you cannnot make it to a LIAAC testing site, LIAAC will visit you at your home and provide a free AIDS test in your home. Long Island AIDS Minority Coalition (LIMAC) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ also sent an AIDS testing mobile unit to provide AIDS testing and counseling from noon - 4 PM. Free AIDS testing and counseling is also available from LIMAC. For information about LIMAC you can contact them at 631-225-5500. Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) was planning on sending its mammography van to the Event. However, the van had a breakdown a few days before the Event. NUMC sent a representative advising women they could schedule an appointment at the NUMC for a free mammography if they do not have health insurance. NUMC has an ongoing program where uninsured women over 40 can obtain a free mammography. In addition, women over 18 years of age can obtain free pap smears. To learn more about the program, contact 516-572-3300. Schneider Children's Hospital ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Schneider Children's Hospital permitted the M. Brodsky Foundation to collect and donate toys for in-patient children at the Pediatric Hematology Unit at Schneider Children's Hospital. The toys were donated to the hospital on June 20th, 2008. Pictured below is Swensen, CCLS Donations Coordinator Child Life Program for Schneider Children's Hospital, accepting the toys at the hospital, and me. The Seaford Boy Scout Troop #239 and their parents, and Scoutmaster Tom Cleary volunteered on race day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Seaford High School Chorus sang our National Anthem at the start of the race.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FRESH 102.7 FM played music and gave away T-shirts and cds at the 5k Event~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ovarian Cancer and Stroke Awareness ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Long Island Ovarian Cancer Education, Advocacy, Networking and Support, a group of ovarian cancer survivors was also present to promote ovarian cancer awareness and to distribute literature. Sandy and Ed Rich of LIOCEANS are pictured below. Hope for Stroke, an organization devoted to educating and helping stroke survivors about how to get their life back together and move forward in a positive direction also presented literature and answered questions. Understanding the warning signs of a person having a stroke and what must be done immediately to minimize the effect of the stroke was also discussed by Cornelis of Hope for Stroke. Thank you Senator Barack Obama, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and the American Medical Student Association ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I would also like to thank Senator Barack Obama, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray for their support for the Foundation's work which includes its annual World AIDS Marathon held in Kisumu, Kenya as well as the 5k AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in America. These letters can be viewed by visiting the website link, see letters. The American Medical Student Association, AMSA, has also created a story line of the Foundation's work which can be viewed by visiting, AMSA M.Brodsky Foundation. Friends came from as far as Jupiter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Friends came from as far as Jupiter, Florida to support the M. Brodsky Foundation's first annual 5k AIDS Cancer Survive Run Walk. Pictured below is my copyeditor, Irene Garbo (left) for the book I wrote, Jodi, the Greatest Love Story Ever Told. I am planning on giving 50 toiletry baskets to each of the following groups: Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition and Nassau University Medical Center. These groups were all involved in AIDS and cancer testing for the 5k Event. Sadly, the product donated to date could fit in a small shopping bag. We could really use items such as shampoos, sunscreen, laundry detergent, dish soap, deodorant, cologne or perfume, tissues, toothbrushes, toothpaste, band-aids, coffee cups, soap and any free samples that people and corporations will donate to those people living with HIV and cancer. I will be donating 200 copies of the book I wrote, Jodi, the Greatest Love Story Ever Told, but I really would also like to donate as many toiletry items, free movie tickets and any other free Event ticket, meal ticket, or other new books, dvds, cds which people would like to donate. Product donations can be mailed to the Foundation's address noted below. Joan and Irene Garbo came in 1st and 2nd place in their age group Randolfi and won the race. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Terry Bisogno, the emcee for the Event cheered enthusiastically as the 57 participants completed the race. Raising money was not easy whereas businesses did donate 45 gifts / certificates valued at over $2,000. Considering the runners entry fee was $22 - $25 and there were 100 trophies to be given out, three for each five year age group, every female received a trophy for her age group except one woman who finished 4th place in her age group. Similarly, almost all the men received trophies. Race Results are posted on the 5k website, see results. Runners and readers, I welcome your comments about how we can make next year's run a more successful Event, both in terms of fundraising and number of runners. Please write to me at the E-mail address noted below or if the comment is race specific you can write to me via the 5k website. Terry presenting the trophies to and Too Many People Had Too Much Fun~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bentsen and Jodi Brodsky Please consider making your annual AIDS or cancer donation to the M. Brodsky Foundation ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Donations are still being accepted and for anyone contributing $100 or more, they will receive an Event T-shirt with their name on the shirt. Donations for the T-shirt need to be received by July 5, 2008 and the donation can be mailed to the Foundation address noted below or via the Foundation PayPal link or via the Race Donation page, Donate Now. 40% of the net proceeds will remain in Long Island and will go towards helping people living with HIV and cancer. The four AIDS and cancer testing organizations receiving assistance in Long Island are Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and the Nassau University Medical Center. The balance of the net proceeds raised will go to AIDS and cancer projects in America (10%) and Africa (50%), as noted on the Foundation website. For more information about the foundation's mission and the World AIDS Marathon, please visit the Foundation and Marathon websites. The Foundation will be announcing a 2008 World AIDS Marathon in Kisumu, Kenya shortly. Please consider making your annual contribution to the M. Brodsky Foundation as the Foundation's work has become my life's work. There are no other Presidents of Foundations who are HIV-positive and have brain cancer whose main fundraising activity consists of them running marathons. But if running marathons can help raise awareness that hundreds of thousands of lives can be saved each year if access to the AIDS medicine is free for people who cannot afford the AIDS medicine, then I have no choice but to continue running marathons. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anyone contributing $100 by July 5, 2008 will receive a personalized 5k AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk t-shirt; $200 for a logo.
