Guest guest
Dear Friends,During the past 10 days, the Kenyan Diaspora community has engaged in much-needed fundraising for those in Kenya affected by the recent violence surrounding the election. Members of the Kenyan Community Abroad have pledged to date funds for the Kenya Red Cross, the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, and for the Gender Violence Recovery Center of Nairobi Women's Hospital.UNICEF has been requesting supplies/goods, and a number of people have posted, offering clothing and other items. There is a drive now to send items directly to Kenya, rather than waiting for a third party, so if anyone can suggest a person or org who can ship to Kenya (as cheaply as possible), please let us know (kaippg@...).Small grassroots nonprofits have been greatly challenged, especially in Kisumu and Nairobi. There is a drive to help them now too, as the economy of Kisumu has been devastated, there are severe food shortages, and much displacement and loss of homes and businesses has resulted from the recent violence. Organizations for which funds are being raised include Reachout, Lake Fellowship Centre, and Deaf Impact Ministry of Kisumu, and SIDAREC (www.sidarec.org) in Nairobi. St Rita Nanga in Kisumu, an award-winning nonprofit with programs benefitting women and children, is also in need. These orgs can be contacted through their directors, or funds can be sent (please specify to whom the funds are going) to the Kenyan Community Abroad (see below for 3 ways to do that).Hezekiah Nyaranga (reachout5@... ) is director of Reachout. Tom Obiero (tomokeyo@... ) is director of Lake Fellowship Centre, Tom Ochuka (tomochuka@... ) is director of Deaf Impact Ministry, Bernadette Otieno (strita42@... ) is director of St. Rita's. All are in Kisumu. Onyango (geogias@... ) is the Project Administrator of SIDAREC (Slums Information Development & Resource Centres) in Nairobi.Items needed by UNICEF are listed below. These can be sent through the US Army, who can get the supplies to Kenya in one day. They have daily flights to Nairobi but you have to get them to a central collection point and have them packed for delivery.
