Guest guest
Running Club for people living with HIV and cancer...other upcoming local / International projects sponsored by the M. Brodsky Foundation October 3, 2008 The M. Brodsky Foundation, a 501© 3 public charity, is pleased to announce its involvement in the following Local/International projects: · The 2008 World AIDS Marathon and its related Events in Kisumu, Kenya starting 11/30. · Fundraising dinner at Corbin & Reynolds, Long Beach on 10/30. · Starting a local running club for people living with HIV and cancer / upcoming 2009 5k AIDS Cancer Run Walk Event in America. · Donating $10,000+ toiletry/gift items to people living with HIV and cancer the week of 11/27. · Donated $1,500 in toys to children living with cancer at Schneider Children's Hospital. · Training for the NYC Marathon with my wife, Jodi, by running 18 miles on September 27th and 19 miles on October 5th even though we still do not have official running numbers. · Running in the 2008 World AIDS Marathon in Kisumu, Kenya on World AIDS Day, 12/1. I, Brodsky, President of the M. Brodsky Foundation, am HIV+, a brain cancer survivor and a marathon runner. This will be the 5th World AIDS Marathon that the Foundation will be co-sponsoring. In addition to the 2008 Kisumu, Kenya World AIDS Marathon, we will be co-sponsoring an orphan dinner for 350 orphans, a children's walk for 500 children, and an opportunity to get tested for HIV/AIDS. Last year 140 people took advantage of the free AIDS testing offered at the World AIDS Marathon in Kisumu. The proceeds of the fundraising dinner at Corbin & Reynolds will benefit people living with HIV and cancer on Long Island, America and Kenya, AIDS and cancer research, orphans in Kenya and starting a running club for people living with HIV and cancer on Long Island.Runners / walkers could join the running club if they are living with HIV or cancer and they join with a healthy person; this way no one knows who has HIV, cancer or is healthy. There will be no membership or race day fees. If the person living with HIV or cancer requires financial assistance for running shoes, the Foundation will provide running shoes. We plan to have a weekly run possibly on the Long Beach boardwalk or in various locations. We will also provide coffee, bagels, bananas and water for the participants. No one knows better than me the positive health benefits one derives from running as I am HIV-positive for 12 years and a 5+ year survivor of brain cancer. It will be my greatest joy to encourage others to participate in running so they may experience similar health benefits. Pictured above, Jodi and I are about to complete the March 26, 2007 Ocean Drive Marathon. On my right is , a cancer survivor who completed 4 marathons in 9 days. Please encourage your friends and relatives living with HIV or cancer that you, as the healthy person, will be there for them.Running Events are a great opportunity to not only raise awareness/money for diseases but they are also an opportunity to collect product donations for people living with diseases. As a result of the Foundation's 5K AIDS Cancer Survive Run Walk in Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long Island on 6/22/08, the Foundation donated $1,500 in toys to children living with cancer at Schneider Children's Hospital. We will also be donating $10,000 in toiletry/gift items the week of October 27th to the four groups which were involved with AIDS and mammography testing at the Foundation's 5k event. 200 bags total will be delivered to Nassau University Medical Center for breast cancer survivors, and HIV+ people associated with Long Island Association for AIDS Care, Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition and Planned Parenthood of Nassau County. The Foundation will be sponsoring a follow-up 2009 AIDS Cancer Survive Run Walk in Cedar Creek Park on June 21, 2009. Pictured above, Swensen accepting the donated toys at Schneider Children's Hospital one week before the 5k AIDS Cancer Run Walk in Cedar Creek Park, Seaford, Long IslandMy wife, Jodi, and I are currently training to run in the NYC Marathon although we still do not have running numbers. However, we are officially signed up to run in the 2008 Kisumu, Kenya World AIDS Marathon. It is our hope that the NY RoadRunners Club will grant us permission to participate in the upcoming NYC Marathon. We are still losing the fight against AIDS. According to the 11/07 report issued by UN AIDS / WHO, for every HIV+ person worldwide who manages to begin treatment with AIDS medicine, there will be 3 newly infected HIV+ people. Every day, about 5,700 people die from AIDS while 6,800 people become HIV+. In America, CDC issued a report in 08/08 that there are 56,000 new HIV cases annually in America up from the estimated 40,000 as previously stated. Why then have non-medical services for HIV+ people been cut on Long Island?! Donations to the M. Brodsky Foundation are greatly appreciated and can be made by mailing a check to the Foundation's address noted below or online, via the Foundation website or Marathon website. If you are interested in receiving a sponsorship package or an invitation to the fundraising dinner, or having me speak at your school, place of worship or school, please contact me by E-mail. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are always looking for volunteers so if you've managed to read this entire newsletter, we could really use your help.
