New Tools to Integrate Gender into HIV Programs

As global partners set their sights on an AIDS-Free Generation, gender issues

will play a vital role in the ultimate impact of promising combination

prevention approaches. Addressing gender inequality and harmful gender norms is

essential to reduce vulnerability to HIV infection, mitigate the impact of the

epidemic, and improve health outcomes. Integrating a gender perspective across

HIV prevention, treatment, and care programs is a guiding principle of the U.S.

President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), focusing on five strategic

areas: increasing gender equity in HIV/AIDS programs and services, reducing

violence and coercion, addressing male norms and behavior, increasing women's

legal protection, and improving women's access to income and productive

resources.
