Hello:

We wanted to introduce ourselves to everyone, our names are Jon, Judy

Kate (2) & Jon (three weeks DS).

I (Jon) may have spoken and told some people our situation and the people

we've spoken to have been very very GREAT and supportive.

We just wanted to say hello and thanks again to everyone who has made us feel

so comfortable thanks again.

Hi and welcome to the list Jon. It's really nice to have you here, and as our

new friend in the chat also.

Guess we from Mondays chat have to brag that we knew about Jon when

he was only 4 days old.

Boy you'd think I'd had enough of babies after having 6 of my own and 2

grandchildren wouldn't you?

I'm sure that you and Judy will have lots of joy and pleasure with your new

baby

Hello Jon and Judy,

A quick introduction... I'm one of the 'old guys', a parent of three kids

who are well underway in their own lives and a parent of an adopted daughter

with some pretty significant disabilities.

Fifteen years ago, when my niece was born with Apert's Syndrome, one of the

things I told my brother and his wife was this:

" The thing that will contribute the most to her quality of life, both now

and in the future, is if she is surrounded by people who know her, who love

her, who aren't afraid to touch her and be touched by her, who understand

that they will be part of her life, and that she will be part of their

lives, forever. "

That was true fifteen years ago, and it's still true. Since then, we've

thought a lot about what this means for families in practice:

It means that one of the major creative roles you can play as a young parent

is to be an 'on purpose' bridge-builder, inviter, and circle-maker for your

son.

It means always expressing your dreams for him and your family to people who

care about you, and eventually helping him express his own dreams.

It means embedding yourselves in a community that you love, building your

lives there, and anchoring his life there.

It means helping him learn to feel safe, loved, loving and engaged with many

people, and helping them feel safe, loved, loving and engaged with him.

It means expanding the family circle, inviting more people in to be 'on

purpose' about him.

It means finding the 'sweet places' in your community where the threads of

his interests, his delights, and his gifts can be woven into a fabric of

companionship and contribution.

The good news is that you're a young family, and this is a good time to

start. You've got lots of time, but it's important to remember that the

time to start is now. I can tell you this as an older dad of a child with

major challenges.

The great news is that families already know how to do all of these things

(in the Family Circle cartoon, Jeffy asks his Mom who is diapering the baby,

" Mom, if babies don't come with instructions, how do mommies know how to

work them? " ). We do.

It will be an exciting journey. And you'll find some great navigators on

this list.

Welcome!
