I read maria's book in B & N today. You didnt actually tell us what you

thought of it. I think it's typically Shriver. She takes a sensitive

issue and writes about it and its OK, and the books sell because of who she

is. I didnt buy it, because I dont think that if i read it to amanda she

would appreciate it. I think that if that book is used during a class

presentation with our children present, they might get upset, because i am

sure that many of our kids dont perceive themselves as having " something

wrong with them. "

Hey I think i can do a better job! Every summer i threaten to write a

children's book. Maybe when i go on my sabbitical i actually will. And then

everyone here will buy it and I can quit my job and just become a special

needs parent and go around visiting families with kids with DS and or

diabetes!!!

Hi,

Ramona doesn't think anything is wrong with her, and I wouldn't want to

read a book that intimated that anyone thought there was. In fact, we are in

the middle of getting her on SSI/medicaid, and all that. I got this

questionnaire that she was supposed to fill out and send back (as well as two

more for other people to fill out, to corroborate the story that she has DS,

lol). It was full of questions that she was supposed to answer, like,

" describe your disability. How do your symptoms interfere with your

activities? " . I called the office, and told them I would not even read these

to her, she is happy with who she is and doesn't need them telling her

something is 'wrong' with her!

Fortunately, we did not end up having to do this silly questionnaire. It

really was designed for people with work injuries and the like. DSHS got

information from the school district that took care of their needs.

knows she has down syndrome, but she too is comfortable with who she

is and she has accepted herself pretty well. she also knows that she has a

hard time doing some things and it takes her longer to do others. In a way,

it's almost like she's proud of who she is. She loves the Buddy Walks and

meeting other people with DS especially babies.

Great idea! I'll bet you'd be good at it too. I don't like the

" what's wrong " idea either. I have always told that having DS

doesn't mean there is anything wrong with him, just that he's a little

different. And he considers himself " special " in a good way. I haven't

been to a book store to see the book but may get a chance tomorrow. Jessie

I wish Down syndrome was mentioned in the book. Timmy answered questions in

ways that our children would not. I think it would be ok for class

presentations. I know 's CCD class will have the presentation before

he arrives. He can't handle all the parents dropping their kids off, so we

always come late. For school, and I do have faith that I'll be able to

present to his class, I'll do it when he is off at reading, math or

something else.

Hey, I have a " dream " book, too. Mine only includes pictures though ;)

Ramona definitely knows she has down syndrome. If that wasn't clear I

just thought I'd say so. She knows which of her friends have ds as well. A

friend of mine has three kids with ds, and her youngest daughter does not.

Her oldest son once said how sorry he was for her because of that...
