Dear Friends,

This is in response to the statement of Dr. P. Narendro of Jawaharlal

Nehru Hospital, Imphal, Manipur in Time magazine September 2002

issue, that " Manipur is doomed " . We are wondering on what basis he

had made such a statement. Manipur is one of the state in the

country, which is producing the best result in HIV/AIDS prevention

intervention program. Also it is the first State in India which

formulated a State AIDS policy.

Many of the intervention projects implemented in the state are

replicated to the other parts of the country as it has shown the

effectiveness of the program and the best result. The result of

various intervention program can been seen from the reports of the

state government as well as from the NGO reports.

We are very positive that one day Manipur will be able to overcome

this problem. It is very unfortunate that such a responsible person

of the state made such a statement.
