Guest guest
Posting from my friend Williss, my 80 year old expert LOL Kathy Re: [interven] Re: [ ] Lipoic Acid (ALA) beginner questions Dear Kathy: Please post this to the autism treatment list for Beverly to see. Regardless of what substance is used. Some will be adverse to it. We shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water as the old saying goes. I was perhaps among the early ones to warn about chelating dangers on the autism boards. ALA is a natural body substance necessary to body health and well being. It is formed naturally in the body. You may well be dead without it. That doesn't mean everyone can or should supplement it, though it can be very beneficial, and has been proven to do some wonderful things in way of antioxidant, and in protecting against diabetic problems. That said, what are the considerations about its judicious supplementation in autism? First, know that ALA is a sulfur-bearing substance the same as NAC. If you can't tolerate the one you will likely not tolerate the other. That is because ALA/NAC both supply cysteine. Due to a failure of the sulfating circuit to break down Cysteine to taurine and to sulfate one can be cysteine poisoned/toxic. The result is what Kathy's children experienced on Immunocalâ„¢--which BTW, is a very fine product, and beneficial to many, but not to PST types most probably. So, when used judiciously, ALA is beneficial to all except those who cannot handle sulfur. The usual rule is 1/2 mg per pound of body weight, but not more than 100 mg per dose. The best dose is 25 to 50 mg for children. I opt for the smaller. There is another class of kids that should not use high doses of ALA. There is compelling scientific evidence that high and constant doses of lipoic acid have the potential to seriously disrupt a number of key minerals including copper, zinc, and molybdenum, possibly elevating copper or zinc to potentially toxic levels. Do not use ALA if known to have high levels of these minerals, or high levels of cysteine. If one has high levels of methyl-mercury (inorganic mercury from fish), ALA can hurt as well. Whether ALA by itself just moves mercury around, I don't know, but it is generally thought best to give it some help in clearing the stuff it has released. The combination of DMSA/ALA does that effectively. Remember, DMSA is not candy. It is potentially damaging to some kids who can't handle sulfur well. That is why one must use low dose, around the clock protocol. Furthermore, one should make sure the child has been taking a good multivitamin mineral supplement for some time before chelating. Those PST types, should be sure to supplement molybdenum to help insure they can handle the sulfur better. A little histidine would probably be in order. It is a powerful chelator too, but these two supplements benefit the sulfur handling circuit. Long term use of histidine could delete zinc and copper. Now, as to Beverly's children's response. It is likely a normal detox response. I questioned Dr. Amy Holmes at length about her experiences with 200 children and with Mikey, her son, in particular. She had used several courses of DMSA until there was no more mercury seen in the urine. Then she began Phase II detox: DMSA/ALA low-dose, around-the-clock dosing. Her words were, " The mercury came pouring out of him again " . It continues to do so several rounds later. DMSA removes only the loosely bound mercury, ALA removes the tightly bound, particularly that in the brain, which DMSA will not remove. Amy mentioned regression and hyperness during the dosing, with definite gains seen in the rest periods. This is one game where there is no gain without pain, yet one should rightfully be watchful for more negative response than is typical. The regression and hyperness Beverly mentioned seems to me to be normal detoxification reaction. It goes away during the rest period, and the beneficial gains are then apparent.
