President Kalam was speaking at an interaction for the development of an AIDS vaccine specific to the Indian strain at the request of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) on Monday. He stressed on cross-pollination of ideas and research from across the globe to speed up the development of an AIDS vaccine. He said for developing an AIDS vaccine, there was a need to free the scientific community from bureaucracy and empower young scientists to carry out the research. At the meeting, which lasted almost an hour, the President said there was a need for a multi-pronged approach to vaccine development. He said research and development of several vaccines should be pursued simultaneously through several collaborators. ________________________________________
