Guest guest
Dear Listers, As requested by Rhonda, here is my understanding of manding and some examples of how we have used it. I think that it is clear from earlier posts that the " pure " mand is asking for for basic needs to be met. A child saying " Bottle " or an approximation " bot " when they are thirsty, what many of us know already as primary reinforcement - But, manding can also be more sophisticated - Examples are: 1) Manding for attention 2) Manding for preferred activities or tasks 3)mandingt to refuse something 4) Manding to get away from an unpleasant situation and the most common adult mand - manding for information Examples would be What time is it? Where is the meeting? Who is that? A nice way we were taught, was to write examples of mands we use in a typical day. We also baselined Lea's level of manding to see the things that she was NOT demanding or requesting. Also, bear in mind that inappropriate behaviour can be a mand - typically for attention and avoidance. This is when it gets smart to track behaviours and teach more apprporiate ways for the child to get what they want. An example would be teaching a child to say " No " instead of screaming or hitting etc or " I don't want to " and also often important, " help " . Our Consultant taught us by asking us to think of times Lea manded and to check if the object was ACTUALLY present or NOT. Was it mentioned verbally first and what times is the child most likely to mand. These times are learning opportunities! Hope this helps and apologies if I have got anything confused in advance! Thanks so very much for this list Rhonda..... UK

What are the procedures for where, when, why, how, what questions? 2. How many exemplars of these a day are needed?(based on our manding techique, I imagine 100's) 3. Did you work on many different kinds of questions at one time? I know Dr. Carbone said that manding requires reinforcement...so asking " When " has to have reinforcement behind it. I need exact procedures for this that have been tried and successful. thank you . much love, kat
