This though to me is a great example of how hard ( not to be negative:) this is, because, if I understand this correctly, he needs lot of exemplars through the day. Just 10 or 15 trials of unknown folks coming to the door won't work. ( and I know it won't work for my son). I need 100 people to come to the door everyday( I have friends but I " m not that popular:)The ideas you mentioned I've had but the issue for me is the implementation using multiple exemplars for a child who needs lots of repetition to find that particular question reinforcing. And administratively working it into the program so that it gets done. I've made up 100 when cards and I'm going to experiement using those cards to make sure when gets done 100 times that day. I'll let you know how it works. More input is welcome from those in s/p who may have traveled this road. Much love, kat
Guest guest
I thought I would ramble on some more about the other questions Kat mentioned. I hope others who know more will chime in too. For asking " who is that? " I would start with a pile of photographs of relatives or maybe unknown cartoon characters would be more reinforcing. Then just p away- " ask me'Who is that? " then answer him. To take it away from the table you could recruit friends he doesn't know to come knock on your door. Then prompt him to ask. Of course when this does really happen don't forget to take advantage. You could even use the ice cream man if he happens to come your way! Then there is a strategy we used which consisted of the basic " Be the teacher drill " where you give him the pictures and prompt him to ask you " Who is this? " or " Who is that? " This tends to be reinforcing for kids so it might be a good place to start. " What time is it? " you could teach in conjunction with " When are we going ? " After some trials of " when are we going ?' Answered with " at five o'clock " prompt him to ask " What time is it? "
