Guest guest
Hi Caroline It's an easy enough test, clean catch urine sample. Bring it to the doc's office and ask them to test it. I thought Faith had one a few years ago but when they tested it was a bacterial irritation from not wiping good enough. A UTI could certainly have the symptoms you indicated. It was irresponsible of the office to put you off when it is so easy to check. ette -------------- Original message from <cjskalsky@...>: -------------- These last couple of days Isabella has been off the mark. Okay, I'll admit, I have never had a UTI and do not know the first thing about it, but am wondering if maybe this is what is going on with Isabella. She never has an accident and has had 2 or 3 in the last 3 days. Her legs are jiumping all around when she is peeing, almost like she is dying to get off the potty especailly while she is going pee. Then she tells me her rib cage area and sometimes her belly hurt. Her bm's are fine, but she seems to have trouble, wincing as they come out and all around taking a long time on the potty.I am clueless, must admit I am checking here before I have done any research on UTIs. The nurse on call of course thinks that it must be constipation b/c she has ds, ugh! Any thoughts would be helpful. BTW, she has no other signs of being ill whatsoever.Thank you,Caroline
Guest guest
It sure sounds like a UTI. Her legs might be ‘jumping’ because it burns when she urinates. What are the Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections? Symptoms of UTI or bladder infection are not easy to miss and include a strong urge to urinate that cannot be delayed which is followed by a sharp pain or burning sensation in the urethra when the urine is released. Most often very little urine is released and the urine that is released may be tinged with blood. The urge to urinate recurs quickly and soreness may occur in the lower abdomen, back, or sides. This cycle may repeat itself frequently during the day or night--most people urinate about six times a day, when the need to urinate occurs more often a bladder infection should be suspected. When bacteria enters the ureters and spread to the kidneys, symptoms such as back pain, chills, fever, nausea, and vomiting may occur, as well as the previous symptoms of lower urinary tract infection. Proper diagnosis is vital since these symptoms can also be caused by other problems such as infections of the vagina or vulva. Only your physician can make the distinction and make a correct diagnosis. I agree with ette…take a urine sample in and ask them to test it. Since you said you never had a UTI before, here are instructions on collecting a clean catch urine: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003751.htm How the Test is Performed Return to top To obtain a clean-catch urine sample, boys and men should wipe the head of the penis clean. Girls and women need to wipe between the vagina " lips " (labia) with soapy water and rinse well. Your doctor may give you a special clean-catch kit that contains a cleansing solution and sterile wipes. To perform this test, first urinate a small amount into the toilet bowl to clear the urethra of any contaminants. Then, collect a sample of urine in a clean or sterile container. About 1 - 2 ounces of urine is needed for a test. Remove the container from the urine stream without stopping the flow. You may finish urinating into the toilet bowl. Take the sample to the lab. For infants, the genital area is cleaned and dried, and then a collection device is attached to collect the urine. If you are asked to collect the urine, be sure the collection device is attached securely to prevent leakage. After your baby has urinated, the urine (at least 20 cc) is placed in a sterile container. Do not use antiseptics, as they may prevent bacteria from growing during the culture. It always used to amaze me how some docs wanted to write Danny’s symptoms off instead of finding out what was really going on..for example, when he was a baby, he used to break out in a cold sweat and soak his sleepers with sweat every time he tried to drink his bottle,,,plus, he vomited numerous times a day…now, in any other baby, that would have been a screaming red flag that he was in congestive heart failure…but even though Danny had a documented , unrepaired AV canal heart defect AND had been on meds for congestive heart failure since he was 2 weeks old, the cardiologist told me (and I quote) “It’s not his heart, Mrs. Ratkiewicz.” Like you say,,,’ugh’ ;-) KathyR From: Down Syndrome Treatment [mailto:Down Syndrome Treatment ] On Behalf Of pbeurrier@... Guest guest
Intrestingly, she does not urinate anymore frequently, actually probably less frequent b/c I do not think she wants to urinate at all....rather be as far away from the potty as possible! Guest guest
Yes, UTI’s are usually treated with antibiotics.  The problem with UTIs is that if you don’t get them under control, they can spread to the kidneys and cause damage. http://altmedicine.about.com/od/healthconditionsdisease/a/uti.htm Natural Remedies for a Urinary Tract Infection Although natural remedies are being studied for urinary tract infection, it is important to seek medical attention and not self-medicate. If improperly treated, a urinary tract infection may spread to the kidneys. This can occur even though a person's symptoms appear to improve. “ End quote. This site also has information about using cranberry juice(unsweetened) to help treat a UTI. The first thing to do, though, is to make sure that it is a uti… The rash sounds miserable!!! Ouch! Guest guest
has had two UTI's in the past 2 years- one was the direct result of horrible diarrhea and the most recent one we assume was incorrect wiping. First one I caught right away after she sat on my head wearing a very wet and stinky Goodnite- second one we missed, much like the strep issue and by the time it was dx she was vomiting and really complaining of side pain which had us thinking appendix. They did a specimen and it was positive, put her on an antibiotic, but she became even sicker in the next 24 hours, had to go back to the Dr and get two ( at the same time) VERY painful antibiotic injections of a broad spectrum antibiotic. Cultures came back stating the bacteria was resistant to the oral one they had used and we switched to the one the culture pinpointed ( an older one ) and all was right with the world again. The ped had said we could have given her the shots at our first visit, but I wanted to avoid the pain for her and see if the oral did the trick, I guessed wrong..... poor kid. I would prolly bet on the oral again though. ;-) The shots are downright nasty. Both times she has had them, she too avoided going potty as much as possible!!! Though she never complained the first time around at all. The second one she only complained after it had gone on for DAYS and only complained of her lower right side hurting and she ran a low grade temp.I used to get them a lot as a kid and young adult. Bath soaps, toilet paper. stress and when older . sex, would set them off. They became less and less the older I got and now I haven't one in over 10 years. My older dd , has followed my same path and has tried lot of the natural remedies, which do sometimes work if you use them before symptoms really get started. That would be hard to do with our little ones as they don't tell us when symptoms have already started!! Would need to be doing it all the time I guess and then I would think it might lose effectiveness? We need to get the wiping issues down so she is not infecting herself with stool ,the number one cause of UTI's in little girls. Let us know what you find out at the Drs. Guest guest
<<Is this something you can get OTC?>> Yes...they're not cheap but not as expensive as a doctor visit. I'm thinking $15 for a few or so???? been a long time. They also have kidney infection tests. They used to be in front of the pharmacy "desk" where you pick up rxes at Walgreens. (Also HIV tests, drug tests etc.) Sometimes if it's not too bad you can flush it out with alot of fluid and cranberry juice plus uristat (which is actually a cranberry concentrate). At least it stops the burning till you can get on antibiotics if necessary. Just watch out for bright orange pee. I crush up a pill for . There is usually relief within an hour...if it's still very painful then it's time for the big guns I suppose. Sherry
