boards,

licensing, testing, etc " if ya got the time " .......

Listmates:

I have always been

intrigued by the wide extremes and often markedly differing points of view

my fellow DCs have expressed over the years....and I was very impressed by

the fierce dedication my own chiropractic mentor, along with other pioneers

chiros, demonstrated in the face of opposition from without and dissention

from within.......it has always amazed me something as good as

chiropractic generates so much antagonism and wastes so much

energy...........

In the early 1980s WSCC

had initiated the " Oral History " project to interview and record what

some of these pioneers had to say about life and times as a

chiropractor when it was not uncommon for DCs to be arrested for

practicing medicine without a license.

I got to know one old

graduate of LACC 1928 and got an earful not just of the clinical experiences

but the political and economic obstacles of the 1930s, 40, 50s.......He had

built an electronic sine wave generator from plans he got out of a 1927 issue

of Popular Mechanics! We gave it to WSCC library...... but as absurd

as it looked now, as advanced for its time, as home-built as it was, it

served the purpose very well in his clinic for over 30 years!! He did

colonics in 1926 in school, opened a large 'sanitarium in southern Cal,

used herbs and a wide range of therapeutics we would call 'broad scope'

and he maintained a strong base in DD

Palmer's

philosophy. Not BJs. He attended some lectures given by BJ in the

early days. He became a chiropractor because as a child he had developed

" polio " and was given up by the medical world. His parents took

him to some 'choir-practor guy' who gave him a drop-pelvic thrust 'that about

killed me' and then 'the same thing to my neck', but after about 3 months of

regular such treatment, he was recovered enough to walk and run normally....

His pithy comments on

current standards, etc motivated me, and instead of

alternately ignoring the needs of our

profession, then complaining about what was wrong........I decided to

DO SOMETHING.....

......I took a small step

and became one of those 'item writers' as I believed the testing

process was actually dedicated to demonstrating what an ignorant fool

I was instead of rewarding me for the tons of irrelevant stuff 'they made

me memorize'.......instead, I learned how hard it is to write a 'good'

question......

And somehow I was

shanghaied into trying to kick that rickety document called

" OCPUG " into a more reasonable form representing what my vision of

Chiropractic was.....and I learned there were other visions that perhaps had as

strong a basis as my own notions.....supported by those more scholarly, more

eloquent, more skilled at verbal persuasion......and who could and often DID show

me where I was just plain WRONG!!!.......

.....Then I was asked to

help on the Exam committee to try to develop a more rational test question

pool that actually related to what the practicing Oregon DCs 'need to

know'..........and I learned there are a whole lot of earnest and dedicated DCs

out there doing things I never even considered doing, that were getting people

well.....beyond me and my vision, but not beyond Chiropractic........

....and the Peer

Review process obviously needed someone to keep it from flagrantly

abusing the hapless field DC.......and I learned there are some out there who

are truly greedy, ignorant, black-hearted or incompetent....but most

of us are none of those horrible things.....

.........and the National

Board exams needed proctors to help insure only 'qualified candidates'

were certified....and I learned to appreciate that regardless of what their

philosophy may be, it is important that they can demonstrate they see there is

a tumor or a fracture in this xray, or they can

actually demonstrate a given basic chiropractic adjustment........

......and I helped with the

mentor program developed by the much maligned OBCE to assist the errant DC

revitalize their professional performance.......

......It continually amazes

me what a large buffet Chiropractic represents. There is something

for each palate and each appetite......

......and each step of the

way, I have been amazed at what I found, was not at all what I thought

was going to be the case.......Dr. Titrud long ago would make a

point, look around the class and suddenly state " Even the SLOW students

can learn this " .....and he would look right at ME.....I always thought he

was making a grand joke........but maybe he was right.....

Hi, Jacque I am glad you wrote in , you will gain useful information her and

lots of parenting information about kids with downs and its ups and downs. My

daughter had motley skin awhile back , the doctor was quite concerned of

oxigen intake that was making her skin look bluish. She was suffering from a

sinus

infection for wks and nothing was helping then we found out she was not

getting enough oxygen in her body. Sometimes due to asthma or illness . Sounds

like

your grandson needs a good checkup by some great dr's. Testing will reveal any

trouble . I wish you luck on adopting him, you can lots of information at

libraries, support groups for families of disabled children. and any on-line

support and information centers . There is tons of information on ds online and

alot of families here can give you bountiful websites and advice. The growling

alot of times I think is sensory due to lack of language . He may be trying to

talk and voice is likes or dislikes Autism is another thing our children tend

to have with ds and kids with autism also growl. My daughter still growls and

she is 10 , she loves to growl instead of speak at times showing her dislikes

to whatever we have requested-lol--. Goodluck and hang in there. Ask for

anything you need here you will receive lots of great advice and information, if

we

dont know , we will find it for you. Thanks Nettie619

Hi! Thanks Nettie for the info...... is my stepson, and I am not

going to adopt him......Custody will be transferred to my husband, and since

he'll still have contact with bio mom, adopting him wouldn't be appropriate.

The only thing that I can do is support my husband in his efforts, and help

him along.

Thanks again for the support! And that oxygen thing bears looking into, b/c

when I first noticed the mottling of the skin, he was very congested.

I'd like him to have an evaluation at a DS clinic in the Northeast, what is

the procedure? And which ones do you recommend?

Thanks again!

I am not sure where your from but we have visited the Down's syndrome clinic

in Indianapolis, Indiana.at Riley Hospital I know there are alot of clinics

forming around the country so your best bet would be to call and find one near

and ask for information. They will also send you some information on down's

syndrome. Easter seals I beleive also sends information out .And birth defects

services also have info. Find those services in your area and ask where you can

gain info and where your nearest clinic's are. If I think of more I will send

them your way. Goodluck Nettie619

day.... also I think there is one is Baltimore maryland... not sure the name and

another in Delaware... also not sure of the name

Jacqui,

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything good here in southern NYS.

There's rumored to be a clinic at Valhalla (we used to call in Grasslands, but

now

it's got some big name), but I know nothing about it and have never known

anyone who went there. I would think about CHOP - Children's Hospital of

Philadelphia or Kennedy Krieger at s Hopkins in Baltimore. Everyone who

has

met him raves about Dr. Capone at KK. It will take months to get an

appointment though. If you can't travel there's a decent developmental

pediatrician at North Shore (his name begins with an 'M'). I go to Dr. Pat

Quinn at LIJ

(offices at New Hyde Park or town). I like her a lot. I only take him

for periodic visits because he's really doing very well.

The Down Syndrome clinic in Baltimore is in the Kennedy Kreiger Institute of

s Hopkins University Hospital; it's rated one of the top hospitals in

the country. The clinic director is Dr. Capone, a neurologist. The

phone number to set up new appointments is 888-554-2080 or 443-923-9400.

It's prolly a good thing that this bounced back from his over flowing mail box this morning.......At least I got it off my chest ;-)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Professor , Your

remarks regarding aborting children with Down Syndrome are as

prejudicial as those who would remark that it *might* be ethical to

abort if you found the child you were carrying was fathered by some

ethnic group other than you own or even simply the wrong sex or eye

color. Had you made THAT statement, you know you would have brought the

wrath of God upon your head.In your heart of hearts, you

somehow felt DS was an exception, that for some reason aborting just

because of DS was more justifiable then aborting a 'healthy' child that

was the wrong sex or color and people with DS are not as valuable as

'regular' people. No matter what you say to try and justify your

example as some kind of catalyst for open discussion, that is the fact

of the matter. It's also a fact many of us come face to face with in

dealing with the medical community. We were asked hours after our

daughter's birth if we would just prefer to let her die of her two

major heart defects. Now i KNOW that had she not had DS, that question

would have never come up. And it should not have come up with her

either. She is just as worthy of life as the next person. No one has

the right to judge her based on a medical diagnosis. The only

lesson you taught your students that day was that children/people with

DS are of less value. That is what they are going to walk away with and

that attitude is the one they are going to have when they do come in

contact with people who have DS or parents struggling with the news. The

DS community is mad as hell and we simply are not going to take this

any longer. I do not feel the need to justify my daughter's life by

informing you of all she has contributed to her family and society. I

have more respect for her than to try to prove to the likes of you that

she is 'worthy'. I will not belittle her in that way. But know this- the time where people can get off easily with such blatantly prejudicial statements has come to an end. Carol in IL AIM doihavtasay1 GigaTribe doihavtasayMom to seven including , 7 with TOF, AVcanal, GERD, LS, Asthma,

,

Looking forward to welcoming you into the porkless environment. I have to

admit, it is harder trying to find a decent pint once you go on shore leave.

Good thing the local protocol officer / shore based admin officer is good

kinda guy.

Which side of Malaysia you gonna be at?
