Guest guest
Forgive me if I missed a post or the details of the origional message but I want to make sure that parents/therapists know NOT to add carrier phrases, such as " I want... " to a mand unless the response is very very strong..... What constitutes a strong MAND? We were told that the child needed to have between 50-100 independent different mands, not 50-100 of one specific mand. (example: not ask for video 50 times per day but to ask for 50 different things, like video, drink, eat, etc.) A child has to have a strong mand of the item/activity being asked for before adding " I want.... " If the request of " drink " is not strong and you add " I want... " what you will get from the child everytime you say " what do you want? " will be " I want " and the child will not know what else to say. Dr. McGreevey said, if you want to increase the response to add a discriptive before adding " I want " . Example: " drink coke " or " drink red juice " . Once the response is strong this way.... is when you need to add carrier phrases such as " I want " or " I need " or " can I have... " , etc. Hopes this helps. If it does not apply to the person who first asked how to increase " I want... " , maybe it will prevent others from just starting out from making this very common mistake Rhonda bbird098@...
