Guest guest
Norms for AIDS labs soon TIMES NEWS NETWORK [sUNDAY, JANUARY 12, 2003 01:39:09 AM ] PUNE: The Maharashtra government on Saturday announced the setting up of a high-powered committee to frame stringent guidelines for the more than 260 pathological laboratories in the state to carry out " accurate " HIV tests. The committee, comprising state director-general of public health, director of medical education and research, representatives of the Avert Society, the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society and the Mumbai AIDS Control Society, will submit its report to the government in a month and a half, health minister Digvijay Khanvilkar said. He was talking to reporters after inaugurating the two-day second national HIV medicine update in the city. The primary idea, he said, is to standardise the laboratory procedures and initially set a minimum qualification to carry out tests such as , Western Blot, PCR viral load, and CD4 count, which can confirm HIV infection. " Once the guidelines are put in place, any laboratory not found adhering to it will be shut down, " Khanvilkar said, adding that consultations with HIV experts are also being held in this regard. While the and Western Blot tests detect HIV antibodies in the serum of patients, the PCR Viral Load test is a genetic test that detects small HIV nucleic acid fragments in whole blood. He said the veracity and reliability of these tests are key to proper diagnosis and treatment. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html/uncomp/articleshow?artid=3405769\
