I went through this last year

There is a mercury free Rhogam shot available, called WinRho by Bayer. It

is very hard to find and VERY expensive (I was quoted $800 by my

pharmacist!). I did NOT have insurance at the time. I declined the early

shot. I waited until my son was born, had his blood typed. When it came

back as positive, I had the shot :-( If he had been negative, I would not

have had the shot at all.

IMO there is no reason for the early test, so long as you are not submitted

to aminio or any other procedure that would result in mixing of blood. The

only problem is during delivery, if there are complications and blood is

mixed, your body will make antibodies against the NEXT child you may (or may

not) have. Therefore, it is perfectly safe to have the shot after the birth

of the child, and only if necessary.

I just wish I knew more when I was pg. with my daughter. I had 2 shots with

her, plus she's fully vaxed :-(

This is what Im hoping to get too! thanks for reposting the

manufacturer!

There is also one more factor that goes into it. Find out if your

blood tested du-....this factor overrides the need for rhogam, even

if you are - and dh +. I just got done reading a book called " Anti D

in midwifery " , and can guess why your midwife talked in circles.

All the testing for rhogam and the mixing of blood happened AFTER

birth was set in the hospital structure. So what you have is Dr's

pulling on the cord after birth to get the placenta out, and tons of

other interventions that could very easily mix the blood, thus making

you build antibodies that would affect future pregnancies. So

honestly, we really have NO idea, in a natural, normal, nonintervened

birth, how likely it is for the blood to mix, except that the stats

would be MUCH lower than they are now.

If you had no interventions (and even vaginal checks can move things

around in there, thus upping the possability of mixture) then it

would be very rare for you to need it. But, of course, it would be

very hard to find a midwife, much less an ob that would respect your

wishes in this regard..:(

Today, I wouldnt decline it personally, but I do wait till after the

babe is born, and test his/her blood off the umbilical cord. That

way, Im not getting a shot if it isnt necessary.

My mother had the typical drug-and-drag deliveries of 5 kids and NO shots.

She's - and I (the first born) am +. You know there was mixing there. My

mw doesn't advise it but she's smart enough to let nature finish the job

(waiting for the mom to puch out the placenta and no clamping til completely

done pulsing and is hard and white).

Hi Kim,

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

Did you ask for the rhogam without mercury?

I don't know otherwise about how long to wait.

I’ve done pregnancy after rhogam but it’s always been at least a year

b/t…so not sure how long you should wait or not.. or if it really

matters.. I think they told you to wait b/c of the miscarriage though

not the shot..

Hi Kim- I was in the same situation. They tell you to wait so your

body can heal. Not because of the shot. I ended up getting pregnant

again 7 months after my Rhogam shot and so far so good. I had my

husband get his blood type tested so I would know if the shot was

necessary or not in future pregnancies (it isn't, he is A-, I'm O-).

That's an option for you although I do know insurance didn't cover

that blood test and it was something like $400.

No one knows the answer to that.

But the concern is mainly with the Rhogam with mercury which isn't

necessarily gone in a set amount of time.

Sorry to say they are clueless & /or lie.

My boyfriend asked the same thing last fall, in a weak moment, about if

there was mercury in flu vax or tetanus vax. They said no. We know there

is tons.

It would depend on 2 things:

1. mercury in the Rhogam - you should be able to get your medical record

to see what brand was given and that would tell you

2. how long the antibodies are in your system (very individualized probably)

so sorry but no easy answer
