This workshop will focus on the prevention of harassment, bullying, and exclusion of students with special needs. Additionally there will be a focus on the teaching and strengthening of resilience and coping strategies so these students feel empowered to take charge of their own lives. We will cover legal, emotional, and inspirational aspects of the topic including hearing from those who have endured or witnessed bullying or exclusion themselves, and have managed to prevail or become upstanders. The workshop will consist of both didactic and experiential approaches led by a variety of experts. Learning Objectives: 1. Sensitize participants to issues among students with special needs in regard to bullying/victimization and cyber bullying 2. Explore specific, practical interventions to strengthen students' and their families' resilience and survival skill base 3. Presenters Hannah is a senior majoring in communication at Elmhurst College who has overcome many challenges to be successful and achieve her goals. She has spoken at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and for the American Pediatric Association regarding living with a disability. She recently received the Lincoln Student Laureate award and won the n Joy Rehabilitation Hospital scholarship four times, along with three honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa. She is currently making a short documentary about her daily life and overcoming her challenges. Amy Felt, MS, LPC, is a School Based Mental Health Specialist at ian Brothers Center for Mental Health as well as a Clinical Navigator for the Coalition for a Psychologically Healthy Community for ABBHH. Amy currently provides group and individual counseling services as well as parent, student, and staff presentations in three middle schools and high schools in District 214. Gunderson, PhD, is a therapist in our youth Partial Hospitalization program with a specialty in " bullying. " He has done trainings all over the metro area in Bullying Prevention. He also maintains a private practice. Trevor Simpson, MA, LCPC, NCC, acts as the Manager of School Based Services within ian Brothers Parish Services as well as serves as a school counselor at St. Isidore in Bloomingdale. He has worked in residential and in outpatient settings as well as in private practice. ne Lukowski, PsyD, is the Clinical Navigator for the ian Brothers Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders Resource Center, which is funded by the ian Brothers Health System Foundation. She assists families in finding appropriate clinical, educational, advocacy and treatment services in their communities. Jackie Rhew, MA, LPC, is the Coordinator of our School Anxiety/School Refusal Program, an intensive outpatient program which utilizes Exposure and Response Prevention and Cognitive Behavior Therapy approaches to help students better manage their anxiety about school and school performance. She works with families and school staff on the transition from the Partial Hospitalization Program back to school and the community. She also maintains a private practice. Shapiro has been a Staff Attorney at Equip for Equality (the Protection & Advocacy agency in Illinois) since 2006. She provides legal representation, training, and advocacy to children with unmet special education needs involved in the Cook County Juvenile Court system. Prior to becoming an attorney, worked at a preschool and as an Applied Behavioral Analysis therapist for children with autism. Jeanne Walsh, LCSW, MBA has over 20 years experience working with children, adolescents and families. Jeanne has worked in a variety of roles in schools, hospitals and mental health settings including serving as the founding CEO of a residential treatment center. Jeanne has also conducted over 200 workshops nationally and has published articles and book reviews on mental health topics. Currently she is an Educational Liaison at ian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital. Jeanne has presented on Cyberbullying throughout the metropolitan area. Sasa Mo, LCPC, NCC, CADC is a school counselor for ian Brothers Parish Services, providing counseling services to two parishes as well as developing bullying prevention programs such as the Culture of Compassion and peer mediation.
