Guest guest
Dear Maitreyi: I would not totally dismiss your arguements regarding wars and the expenditure on health care. In real world things are different with multiple varibales some known and predictible but many more unknown. Your explanations would make sense under the premise that " India is left alone " -which is a luxury for any country in this day and time-with no outside interference in our affairs. Let us agree to disagree! Vijay -------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Vijay, Thank you for not dismissing totally my arguments. And I agree that the real world' has many variables also. But what I suggest is of being bold and courageous. After indipendence, India had a real chance or a political moment to show the world that it is different. Gandhiji set the pace, the nonviolent content of independence movement could have changed history, if India declared that it won't have an army. Being a big country such decision would have influenced rest of the world. India could have asked the United Nations for all its protection, which could have made it difficult for the rest of the world to attack or conquer it. Being the land of Budha, Upanishads and Gandhi the initiative was with us. Of course we lost that political moment. Yet somebody has to bell the cat. Again why not us. We could still declare that we are not for war and start dismantling our army. This will definitely put the super powers or G7 in a soup. Being world leaders the responsibility will lay on them to protect a neutral nation. Once a big country take such an initiative, it will help change the course of history. If America attacks us can we win this so called war? Know that we can only threaten countries like Pakistan and Srilanka. But by dismantling our armed forces and appealing for protection from the UN will definitely help us win the real war. In fact we will even win the super powers. Moreover we could really save our citizens from real dangers like diseaces and not percieved ones like wars. This way we could find the connection of war and peace with fighting HIV/AIDS. If we don't stop this foolishness, we will die of AIDS as well as of bombs. No escape.
