Sex With A Twist ... Lemons Provide Protection?

Australian scientists believe that a few drops of lemon juice can be a

cheap, easy-to-use solution to protect women from both HIV and pregnancy.

According to reproductive physiologist Short, from the University of

Melbourne's obstetrics department, said that using lemon juice as a

contraceptive was not a new idea but it had fallen by the wayside over the

years and laboratory tests found not only does lemon juice kill sperm, it

also kills the AIDS virus itself. He said that the juice, which should be

squeezed onto a piece of sponge or cotton wool and placed into the vagina

before sex, has acid levels similar to lime juice which can also be used

and both fruits often freely available in poor countries where

contraception is hard to come by. (Reuters, 10/10)

Hi--

What do people think about this? It sounds like at least ONE idea (for

those with lemon access!)--what other fruits have such a high acid content?

Probably not a great idea for anal sex....and I wonder that the epithelial

lining may not be damaged by the acid and, like nony-9, actually

potentially enhance infection in people? Has anyone reviewed the original

data to see if this is just a test tube discovery?

Dear Friends -

This is an absolutely terrible recommendation. Juice is a glycolic acid

that actually damages the tissues of the vagina, in the short to medium

term, thereby making a female more prone to HIV/AIDS infection. Please do

not recommend this type of prevention to anyone.

Dear Forum members,

Please do understand that all those things that can kill the virus and/or

sperms doesn't automatically become the usable microbicide. We need to look

at several other relevant factors.

Hello Everyone,

I have been researching lemon juice as both a preventative to pregnancy and as

protection against HIV. Unfortunately I have found no empirical data or

studies. The only references I have been able to find have been in books

discussing " folk lore " and myths, and even then only three mentions. In my

opinion I do not believe lemon juice to be effective against pregnancy. I do

believe it may actually increase the risk of contracting HIV, both due to the

acidity serving as an irritant and because it would change the normal PH of the

vaginal canal. I welcome opinions and thoughts regarding this matter.
