Hi Beth,

I did find one support source in Canada through the website www.apraxia-kids.org The web address for the Toronto Support group (the only one I found in Canada) is http://apraxiaontario.homestead.com/index.html and the contact people are Barbara Butts, barbarabutts1@... Wheaton, lchase@... and Rhonda son Cherry, rhondaj@..., (905)780-1489

Ontario

Toronto GroupA support group for parents of Children with Apraxia has been established by parents for parents/caregivers in the Toronto area. Our aim is to provide a supportive environment in which to discuss concerns, to bounce ideas off each other and share successful strategies and resource information. You are not alone. If you have, or think you may have, a child with apraxia, and would like to join our support group, please contact us.

Even if this group is to far for you to attend, please contact them. I don't know if school and insurance laws are different in Canada. If you have the chance, please let me know when you find out. I'm sure they can let you know about insurance and school therapies and what is covered, and help answer your "what is my child entitled to?" questions. It sounds like the school systems (insurance) in Canada does not provide therapy from what you have written me. I don't know if I am misunderstanding, or if this is the case.

In response to your one question: in most cases, I would say it's better to wait until 6 since apraxic children need so much more time/therapy to catch up. If we can give them that extra year so that they don't have to struggle as much, why not? In one small study by Tom of the Pittsburgh Hospital in the US they found it took 81% more therapy to see results than a child with severe phonological delays.

Our new question and answer page may also help you at http://www.shopinservice.com/questions_answers.htm See if some of the answers to your non legal questions are there. I'll also send your message out to everyone to see if others can help.

If you have more information, please respond direct to Beth at proteche@...
