I had the laproscopic myotomy performed this past Monday 6/18. The surgeon requested a gastroenterologist to assit. All I remember is the anestesiologist saying I am going to give you something to relax. My next recollection was in the hospital room. The rest of the surgery description is from the dr.

The gastro dr. did an endoscopy during the surgery. The endoscopy light actually illuminated the LES for the surgeon and verified that the incision of the LES opened the esophogus. The surgeon made 5 small openings for the laproscopic instruments. One of those openings was used to add carbon dioxcide gas which inflates the abdominal cavity so the surgeon can manuever the instruments. None of the incisions was over 2 cm. The incisions were all closed with tape smaller than bandaids. No bandages were used.

I awoke still under sedation and not in any terrible discomfort. I was on an IV drip and not allowed any water or food by mouth that 1st day. The incisions hurt later in the day and I was given some pain killers which were very effective.

The morning of day two I was given liquids for breakfast. That afternoon I had soup and custard. I was discharged the morning of day three with instructions to stay on a "mechanical diet" which is basically soft foods for 2 weeks. The surgeon told me that my esophogus was stretched and that he recommended that I eat when hungry, but just small meals It is now day 6. The incisions hardly hurt, and I have had no difficulty eating anything soft, ie eggs, chopped tuna, soft pasta. I did have had nighttime chest pains (spasms) 2 days after getting home. My surgery was performed at the Laproscopic Center of North Shore Hospital in Syosset, Long Island NY by Dr. Alan Geiss.
