Guest guest
Hi Pierre; Your symptoms sound like what I experienced when I first began to have problems. I would occasionally have trouble swallowing liquids or meat or bread if I ate too fast or took large bites. I had a balloon dilation and it did not get rid of the problems completely, but it did help and I was fine for about 18 months. I then (after 18 months) started seeing the same symptoms come back, and over about 4 - 6 months they got progressivly worse to the point where I had a lot of difficulty eating and usually regurgitated at most meals. That's when I decided it was time to have the surgery and it has helped greatly. I rarely have any discomfort and when there is a swallowing problem it is slight, and momentary. If I were in your current situation, I would try the dilation first, to see if that helps alleviate the symptoms. Your symptoms do sound mild at this point. However, I've read that if you have the dilation over and over again, or if there are other complications, such as ruptures and tearing during the dilation (which I think tends to be fairly rare) then the scar tissue does make later surgery more difficult, so I would not consider the dilation to be something to do repeatedly to put off surgery and I would also question having the dilation if your doctor indicates that there are reasons why you might not be a good candidate for a dilation. Good luck with whichever you decide!
