Beverly and anyone who cares:

To prevent spasms:

Reduce or eliminate caffeine

Reduce or eliminate stress (especially major stress)

Take a magnesium tablet daily (about 150 mg, which is 1/3 of the Daily Recommended Allowance)

If necessary (and if there are other indicators) get a prescription for an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant.

To stop spasms as they start up:

Chugging a cold, non-carbonated drink (water works best for me).

Sipping a cold, carbonated drink.

Sucking on an ice cube or popsicle (Popsicles are fantastic for post-surgical spasms).

Sometimes something warm will help if it is mild...tea, soup, etc.....

Taking 2 magnesium tablets and/or 400 mg. Ibuprofen (both if I think it could get bad)

Trying to rest/sleep after I have taken the magnesium or ibuprofen.

Having my husband rub "the spot" - just under my right shoulder blade....really, really hard (sometimes I'll lay on the floor and have him really lean into it)

Stretching my shoulders/neck, rotating them

To stop a spasm cycle:

If the spasms get so bad that nothing is working, I have a few tablets of Flexeril on hand (cyclobenzapr is the generic name for those of you overseas! - 10 mg). I will take 1/2 or 1...if it is really bad. But I must sleep immediately after. I'm not a drug taker and they really affect me! But BINGO! Spasms are gone when I wake up and then I have to go back & evaluate PREVENTION again (usually I need to reduce stress ONCE AGAIN! lol).

I know that some people use an under the tongue med. that seems to work, too.
