Guest guest
Hi, all! To Dawn: if you're a weak person, I know that I REALLY am! I've been panicking this weekend and pitying myself and big time! We've been worried about his job for some time now. Then, we had some bad news today: had put in for a leave of absence from work in order to save his job, since he's missed so much time with his DES. Well, he found out today that he was rejected for the leave! I think they just want to keep working on a way to fire him (and his missing time being sick will probably do it). It makes me mad that they will sort of kick him while he's down! I called and started a claim for him for social security disability last Friday, but we were hoping he could hang on to his job and draw their short term disability for a few months, since it's so hard to collect soc. sec. disability. I was really upset about all this today until I talked to a co-worker whose husband has been out of work for a whole year (except for a few months where he took a really low-paying job). They have 3 1/2 year old twins and are relying on her income alone (less than my job pays), to pay their bills, since he's run out of unemployment. She worries about losing their house. This job has been a source of stress for , so I keep thinking that maybe this could actually turn out to be a good thing for him to lose it. I had been hoping he could start his leave this week and start working on reducing his stress, but I guess he'll have to go back to work and wait for them to fire him. It's been hard today, but I'm still looking for that silver lining to this cloud! Thanks to Ann and others for reminding me with their posts to try to keep things in perspective! Take care, everyone! in Michigan wife of with DES (one of the " other E motility disorders " )
Guest guest
Hey ! Ugh. Sorry to hear about all that. Job worries really suck. I know that it is really hard to get to the days activities when you feel like things are so up in the air. Especially something we are so dependent on. It is really a bummer. Hope things go your way. Dawn in Ohio...known pity party thrower > > Hi, all! > To Dawn: if you're a weak person, I know that I REALLY am! Guest guest
I;m not sure what DES is...but the US FMLA (an act) give you up to 12 weeks of legal unpaid leave if you've been @ work for a year + though. > > > > Hi, all! > > To Dawn: if you're a weak person, I know that I REALLY am! Guest guest
, I hear you on the job woes. Its not right for people to just kick you while your down, but that’s what happened when I was pregnant. I ended up having to leave work when I was 26 weeks pregnant, well FMLA is only 3 months. So within a few weeks of having the baby I was fired because I was on short term disability, and they wanted me to come back to work like a week after having him, mmmmm well that didn’t go over well! So they replaced me and then let me go. Guest guest
, That sounds even more heartless - a mom with a new baby being fired! Companies these days just don't seem to have any compassion at all - strictly business! Dave, has used all his FMLA-allowed days off intermittantly on his bad days. They add on again from last year as he took them off (e.g. he missed Aug. 18th last year, so Friday he'll get another FMLA added on), but it doesn't seem to be enough to cover all his bad days. Thank you both for your replies! in Michigan wife of , with DES (one of the " other E motility disorders " )
Guest guest
Yeah well I haven’t been able to find a job since and I think a lot of it has to do with that job and the references I get from them. UGH!!! So I’m on the job hunt once again now that we have moved to a new town. Hopefully I will find something soon. Guest guest
, That's even worse, that they gave you a bad reference! I worry about that for with this company, too. He already feels depressed about how they pick on his job performance. Good luck in your job hunt! Hopefully, the job outlook is better where you are than in Michigan! We have record unemployment here right now! in Michigan > > Yeah well I haven't been able to find a job since and I think a lot of it > has to do with that job and the references I get from them. Guest guest
Dear , Let me say that although I do stand by my attitude of putting things in to perspective, this should in no way undermine the seriousness of your's and other's problems. I am no "pollyanna" who laughs off every bad thing that happens. It is simply my way of coping with life. I and most of the people in this Group have had our share of sadness, heartache, agony and even, I believe, hell. I learned this coping technique a long time ago, in 1970 in fact, when my then fiance was in a Cancer Hospital suffering from a malignant tumour in his spine. He talked with me from his wheelchair and said "Look over there at that little boy. He is only 12 and he has a brain tumour. There is always someone worse off than yourself, isn't there?" At the time I could not see how he could imagine that anyone else could be any worse off than he and marvelled at his selflessness. But later I realised that he was using this to cope with his own despair. It was a hard lesson for me to learn, but a valuable one. I hope that things all turn out for the best for you and . I do feel your fear and your pain and sadness. I just try to help you and others to cope. What else CAN we do? Guest guest
Ann, Thanks for your reply! You're right! It does help to remind ourselves that things could almost always be worse. I have always thought of my work in a dental office as a sort of " therapy " , too. Just when I think things are so bad for myself or my family, I talk to someone there who has it worse. Usually, it's our patients and their families, but Monday it was my co-worker. Thanks for all your encouragement, Ann! in Michigan > Hi, all! > To Dawn: if you're a weak person, I know that I REALLY am! Guest guest
About venting over life's stuff, well, I think it's a great idea to vent here, especially if stress makes Achalasia worse. Let it out, baby! I'm getting ready to sell my home down at the beach. The problems with the home-owners, my need for peace and quiet, and the fact that I'll need the cash to pay off some bills, means, good bye beach, good bye Surf Club (they're down there now, shouting and frolicking and doing beach cheers, Gawd Bless 'em... and I really DO love seeing their brightly colored beach tents and giant umbrellas, and throngs of kids with their boards heading for the water), Good Bye drives up the California coast, etc. I realized I am not so much sad over leaving as just sort of deflated....I sold my truly wonderful house three years ago and then found this beach pad....life just goes up and down, doesn't it? I made it through the Achalasia surgery with you guys cheering me on, with my son helping me home across town in a cab, to coming back to my beach pad and being totally surprised when my dear sister showed up, driving down from Nevada, to take care of me for a week. Miracles never cease! And now a new adventure. Scrambling for a new place to live, time-being. Paying off bills that my insurance won't cover, paying off stuff that was supposed to help me feel better about my job and life, and getting some dental work done, two teeth at $2500. per tooth. I've got work ahead of me. I have Achalasia symptoms here and there. But I also have two ish Terriers whom I love and one, very fat, very sweet old cat who tolerates me. I love them all. Maybe I'll end up renting for a year and I could park myself somewhere near Cedars Sinai. Then I could visit the doctor's coffee shop/dining room and listen in to various conversations, eh?! Wishing all of you the best of swallows, Deborah, lingering a the beach P.S. And, Oh, it's a beautiful day on the sand today! Not too hot! And a summer breeze is criss-crossing over the waves, the sand dunes, in and out of the palm trees and up my little terraced hill and into my bedroom window! Very, very lovely!
