Dear Evita, I just want to make you aware that this test (manometry) seems to differ widely as an experience. I know that Notan thought it was not too bad and (NY) thought it was dreadful. Although my test had to be ultimately regarded as unsuccessful as 2 very competent doctors were unable to get the probe/scope through the LES, and consequently the whole thing took 90 minutes, I found it copeable (sorry if I made that word up) I got through it by relaxation techniques, deep breaths, closing my eyes, anything that was necessary to take me out of the procedure as much as possible, except for the times when my co-operation was needed, which in itself is distracting, as you have to concentrate on the instructions. What I am trying to say, is that if you do not allow yourself to get too worked up about the test, you have more chance of getting through it without too much trauma. Others may beg to differ, but those are my feelings about manometry. In the beginning it was not that bad, but the whole procedure takes about 30 minutes, in the end I panicked and wanted to get up and pull the tube out of my nose, but the nurse was able to calm me down and said that is I stopped it would have been for nothing. So I relaxed.I also threw up all the water I had swallowed, it looked more like slimey mucus.I was happy that I did it, I was proud of myself, but now I say : never again. But there are people, like Notan, that undergo it

without any major problems.

Dear Ann,

You are the only ones I know that have A, where I come from (Belgium), I

only know 1 person that has it, and he is kind of a local superstar, so I

can't go to him and says : he dude, what's up?

I would like to get in touch with him, but I don't even know how.

I know that my experience probably was one of the worst kind, I had a

gastroscopy last week (thinking about have a lap band), but having A doesn't

make things simpler.

Anyway, I asked to be sedated, and they did, and I was scared over nothing.

If I have to have it a second time, I most probably will (what else can I

do?), but I will focus on my breathing and not so much on the tube in my

nose and throat.

The fact that A is still farely unknown here, also plays a big role, I

think.

I wasn't guided as good as most of you guys were.

Thanks anyway for the remark.

Hi! I'm new to the site, still learning and trying to make

decisions...thanks for being here.

As for manometry - I " ve had three in the last year. The first was

okay, uncomfortable but not unbearable. Unfortunately, the doctor

felt it necessary to repeat the test a month later, and he wanted to

conduct the study himself - thank goodness a nurse was there to

help! But, we were able to get more conclusive results to confirm

achalasia. I have since had botox injections twice, and this past

month had another manometry and another barium swallow - yuck.

Deep breathing and other relaxation techniques help. I also tried

to remind myself that this wasn't sooo bad - after all, someone

else, somewhere, had to be the first patient, and many others must

have been subjected to trial procedures as they researched

the " best " probe materials - how wide should it be, how flexible...

I've asked my doctor if he has ever experienced these tests and let

him know that I think he should try it efore subjecting anyone else

to it!!

Good luck.

Dear Evita, I just wanted to comment about the local "superstar". He may be what you say, but in the lonely hours of the night, he is like you and me. If you could find a way to communicate, he may need the support. He may need it more than you know. If he is in the spotlight, he is probably involved in many social occasions, and you know how difficult that can be at times for us. And also, if he is as superstarish as you think, he may have a web site. Have a try.
