Guest guest
Hi Pippa, I have posted infrequently about my experiences with hiccups. I have done a number of "unscientific studies" about them. Unlike you, I get them towards the end of a meal, and oftentimes right after the meal. They are very strong, and painful at times to try to hold it down. I have found a correlation between eating and violent hiccuping. In my case I believe that it is an "air pocket" being expelled by the body (esophagus) that is created when food transfers itself from the esophagus to the stomach. As many of us on this Board have done, we have discovered ways of getting food to go down. While I don't belly dance to accomplish this, I do jump up and down sometimes. I can feel the pressure lessen in the esophagus and food get into the stomach when I do this. Sometimes, the simple act of walking will also do this. Often, the feeling of the food progressing to the stomach will result in a loud hiccupping type of sound. It happens too often to be a mere coincidence. To me, this has become like an "all clear" signal that food has gone down. The reality, of course, is that some food has gone down, but there is still plenty where that came from. So, the more I hiccup, the more I have cleared, and the better I feel. Just as an aside: When out in the public, I sometimes do it so loudly that heads will turn. But, alas, it is too late for anyone to realize it is me, since by the time someone looks in my direction my facial expression has returned to normal and I just go about my business like nothing happened, and the onlooker just shrugs and goes about their's. So, Pippa, this may or may not be you. There might be a progression with what is happening with you, where the hiccups don't seem to mean anything now, but might later on. I'll go out on a limb and say that you are sitting with food in your esophagus many hours after a meal, so that when you do hiccup (seemingly "out of the blue"), it is really telling you that food has gone from the esophagus to the stomach. I don't consider them spasms regardless of the pain level. In a message dated 9/16/2006 3:27:11 P.M. Guest guest
Pippa -- I get the hiccups too just like you describe. And I get them sometimes like says at the end of the meal. They hurt but if they happen at the end of the meal I'm more likely to keep the meal down. I was never really sure why -- just another strange thing.. Ah it's nice to be back on the computer -- the laptop I usually use has crashed and I'm attempting to get it fixed. Take care Pippa, Kathleen > > I seam to be getting what I can only described as violent hic cups > which only happen between 1 to 4 times for no reason (i havn't just > eaten or drank anything) and they happen out of the blue. > > They are simmilar to a hic cup but are really quite painful and I can > feel my whole chest jumps. > > Does anyone have this problem? > > Are they hic cups or spasams that I have read people in this group > have? > > Pippa >
Guest guest
Thanks Kathleen I really do appreciate all the support I am getting I used to get hic cups after everything I ate and like you then knew that the food would stay down. But that then stopped and now I just get them out of the blue I suppose its because its taking longer for the food to enter my stomach.
