It is a trade off, comfort or accuracy, because most sedatives will effect the muscles being tested. There are people that have achalasia that do not have problems, or have less problems, after drinking alcohol smoking pot, or taking some strong pain meds. I think it could also be possible to miss a diagnosis of achalasia if the muscles are to relaxed from drugs. Likewise, we know that many people with achalasia have more trouble when stressed. Perhaps if they are too sedated the problems won't be active enough to be diagnosed, even if the effect of the drug is not suppose to directly effect the muscles. notan 4-H Leader extraordinaire! Guest guest
First of all I would like to extend to everyone in this group my wishes for a better year of health and happiness to each of you and your families. Next,I would like to thank both Carolyn and for their advice and for responding to my call for help. Thanks Notan for trying to clarify the comment Carolyn made about the sedation. I just assumed that she meant I should not be sedated. I will definitely take all of your advice, I am first scheduling the Barrium Swallow and Upper GI tests. If I am diagnosed with Achalasia then I will seek out a very experienced specialist as all of you have advised, but I will take one step at a time. Reading all your posts is so helpful and I have learned alot from joining this group. The support I have witnessed in this group has just been awesome. You are all very special people. Thanks again for being there for me. Orlando, Florida A. you SHOULD be sedated for the manometry. > > Are you thinking endoscopy? Last I knew most doctors insist on no sedation for manometry. I had a good hunch you did mean endoscopy but I figured it gave me a good chance to explain it to any of the new members why it is done the way it is. notan
