Guest guest
Thank you so much, Tonia. You are too kind. I am trying to get logistics taken care of now. As I said, I only have one son and it looks like he, my daughter-in-law, and grandson will be with me before the surgery and three days afterward. I hope I am out of the ICU by the time they have to leave. My son will come back on the 14th. They will be staying at the Suites Hotel. in NY, I am looking forward to hearing from you since you have been all through this. Guest guest
Hi , I can so much understand the many questions you have! I am facing my -ectomy and I have been facing it since say June/July (Dutch waiting lists...). Each and every time I get my questions answered, new questions arise. I am so thankfull to be member of this board, as all my questions got answered so far and my fears have really been taken away (for as far as possible). You will be having your surgery done soon, that's a good thing, as you don't have too much time to go "crazy" in (I think I drove the other members here pretty crazy all those times I went "crazy" myself -LOL-). I learned to look at the bright side of the surgery: finally the whole achalasia thing will come to an end. Finally you will be able to move on with your life and finally you will get your life back and you will be in charge again, without lack of food and energy and without those spasms. Yep, we need to go through a heavy period, a lot of pain and through major surgery, but it's for a good cause. Keep that in mind and please don't be afraid (I know that's a hard one and I am sure I will get scared myself too once the date for my surgery will be set, which hopefully will be done tomorrow). Love, Isabella 'Ectomy Scheduled for February 7 Hello,Dr. Rice's scheduler called me today and my 'ectomy is scheduled forFebruary 7 with pre-op testing on February 5. I have had surgery manytimes, but this is the most major surgery I've ever had and I'm alittle nervous. Can those of you who have had this tell me what itwill be like. I know a lot of pain is in store, but hopefully theywill be able to monitor that with meds. I am also a very 'hard stick'when it comes to needles; my veins like to hid and roll. Guest guest
Hi , I meant to respond to your previous post, but didn't get to it yet. I had an 'ectomy by Dr. Rice back in March 2007 - I'm quickly approaching my one year mark and doing well! I am 34 years old (was 33 at time of surgery) and would be happy to answer as many of your questions as I can. As nervous and as anxious as you are at the moment, please rest assured that you are in the best of hands. Dr. Rice is excellent at what he does, and you will be fine. I am at work at the moment, but again, would be happy to answer any of your questions either on the board, offline through personal email, or over the phone. Let me know what works for you! I have unlimited long distance and can call you from home or during work, whatever works best for you. Guest guest
Hi! I know I am in excellent hands with Dr. Rice as he did my lap heller with DOR in July 2004. It is just that I've never had a surgery quite like this before; I have never been incubated or had chest tubes, etc. I am just a little nervous! Also, I am 52 and don't expect to recover as quickly as you young girls! I have a doctor's appointment this morning but you can call me this afternoon at 703.303.1964 or email me with your number. I have unlimited long distance. My email is sandraphipps@DotNet! I am looking forward to speaking with you, . > > Hi , > I meant to respond to your previous post, but didn't get to it yet. > I had an 'ectomy by Dr. Rice back in March 2007 - I'm quickly > approaching my one year mark and doing well! Guest guest
Thanks Millie! After 15 years of dealing with achalasia, I have had enough. I can only swallow liquids right now, so I am ready and anxious to get it overwith and get on the road to recovery and normal eating! I wish you the best in your early stages of 'a'; just be sure you get a really good doctor. Dr. Rice told me by the time I got to him in 2004, I had far too many dilations and botox treatments. Guest guest
Sandy, had his ectomy on Dec. 6th by Dr. Rice and is doing wonderful. His pain was very well controlled and he hardly complained of any. He had a central line in but I don't remember ever hearing him say if they put it in before he was put to sleep or not. He is eating and is tolerating food. He is eating in moderation but it is so wonderful to see him eating and not having any problems. He said it all feels so different when he swallows but Dr. Rice assured him that is normal as everything is new and will take some time to get used to. He was in the hospital from Dec. 6th to December 14th. They released him on that Friday and we had to stay at the Guesthouse until he seen Dr. Rice on the following Tuesday. They wanted him close in case he developed any problems as we lived so far away. We were there a total of two weeks. I pray all goes well for you and that you will have a wonderful future ahead eating the things you love. Guest guest
Sandy, This is . Sorry for taking so long to respond. Taking it easy and just now got on the computer. I'm also a hard stick when it comes to IV's and stuff, but the OR crew is wonderful. They numbed my hands before they started and I didn't feel the IV's go in, just a little pressure. They got me on the first stick and I remeber the anesthesiologist saying relax and breathe easy, and I don't remember anything after that. Everything else was done after I was knocked out. You also don't have to worry about pain. I have a very low tolerance to pain, and they kept me very comfortable. You are in very very good hands. I had scope on Monday(7th) of this past week and everything looked great. I see Rice in 2 weeks on the 28th of January for my second follow up to make sure I'm doing good eating and haven't lost weight but maintained. I have been eating soft foods since Thursday and working other foods in. So far I've been able to eat everything I've tried with no problems whatsoever. It felt really good to sit at CrackerBarrell on Thursday and have soup and a couple bites of meatloaf and not have to run to the bathroom, or drink what seemed like a gallon of water. If there is anything you want to know or have any questions about, you can message me here, or call my cell at: 606-776-0007. I wish you the very best, and so far it was the best surgery I've ever had done. in KY achalasia From: juliecwarren@...Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 08:23:25 -0600Subject: RE: 'Ectomy Scheduled for February 7 FYI my central line was put in after I was asleep!!! Guest guest
HI all, When i was in hospital in 1995 with a ruptured oesophagus, i had the original central line put in while anaesthetised, but had three more central lines put in under local anaesthetic in the following five weeks. It was not painful, but i had to be perfectly still while they did it - i was covered with a sterile cloth etc. then had to be XRayed afterwards to make sure it was in the correct place and not touching the heart!! It really wasn't a big drama. Deb Re: 'Ectomy Scheduled for February 7 Sandy, had his ectomy on Dec. 6th by Dr. Rice and is doing wonderful. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, It depends on the type of surgery the surgeon thinks is best for you. I had an Ivor oesophagastrectomy, which involved cutting the abdomen from breastbone to belly button, doing all the prelim work of stomach reshaping etc, then they did the thoracotomy and pulled the stomach up to repalce the oesophagus which they removed. The stomach was then stapled and stitched into place at the base of my gullet or fairly high up in the chest. This way the surgeon didn't have to cut my neck and risk damage to my vocal chords (i am a music teacher, singer and Choir leader). It all depends of course on what state your stomach is in - if it is very small and shrunken, then it might not stretch up to the top of the chest and sometimes the surgeons have to use bowel instead of stomach. Guest guest
I did have a central line put in when I had aspiration pneumonia after the birth of my son in late 2004, and I was totally awake for that and it was just as Deb described it below. But when I had my 'ectomy I didn't require one, although if I had, they would have done it after I was either sedated enough that I don't recall anything, or when I was totally under. in NY Re: 'Ectomy Scheduled for February 7 > > Sandy, had his ectomy on Dec. 6th by Dr. Rice and is doing > wonderful. Guest guest
, My understanding is that sometimes they need to do a thoracotomy to get to everything on the inside. Dr. Rice did my 'ectomy using the transhiatal method, so I had an incision from right under my breastbone to about an inch above my belly button, and also a neck incision. He was able to do everything he needed that way, and did not need to add the thoracotomy. You should definitely talk to him about this, and see what his intentions are. Clearly he will try not to do it if he doesn't have to, but if he needs to he will. I went into it assuming he would need to and was then pleasantly surprised when I found out he didn't do it. In fact, I actually woke up in ICU, still intubated, and motioned for a pen and paper and wrote the word " thoracotomy? " on the paper to find out if he had done it (since I couldn't feel anything at that point). The ICU nurses and my husband were shocked, because they didn't figure I'd be making any sense of anything or be able to write or anything at t hat point. Rice usually keeps you sedated that whole first day you are in ICU. (Let's see, I've always told them I have a high tolerance to all that medication....maybe now they believe me). Anyway, they also said even if I was able to make sense at that moment, there's now way I would remember it. Guest guest
Thanks, ! Also, how long were you in ICU and in Cleveland? Dr. Rice said there would probably be some rehab for me. > > > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > > > Dr. Rice's scheduler called me today and my 'ectomy is > > scheduled for > > > > February 7 with pre-op testing on February 5. Guest guest
When were you given the epidural? I had no idea you would have to have one of those. Dr. Rice told me I could count on being in Cleveland three weeks. Was the J-tube easy to deal with? Were you able to do everything by yourself? The reason I ask is that I only have one son, who will be with me part of the time, but only part. I will come home alone. I remember I had to be threre at 5:30 when they did my myotomy, but it was nothing as severe as this as it was done laporoscopially. I remember waking up from that and terrible pain in my shoulders, which went on for weeks! > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > > > > > > > Dr. Rice's scheduler called me today and my 'ectomy is > > > > scheduled for > > > > > > February 7 with pre-op testing on February 5. Guest guest
Hey - I am surprised DR Rice didnt talk with you about the epidural,he went step by step in detail along with pictures when he talked to JAmes about his surgery. That was a little too much I thought for a kid. They gave JAmes the epidural for when he had his open myotomy. He loved it cause you cant feel nothing. He had his in for 4 days I believe. As far as the pains you had after your myotomy -it was gas they blow air into your body during surgery. It is painfull. had the same issues but he didnt start to feel his until after the epidural came out.Heat really helped with his but only time makes it go away.I had surgery a month ago and had the same thing happen to me-Yeah it hurts like heck! But once again.... heat did help relieve it alot.I used the heat packs that you open and stick by velcro.I think they are called thermacares They work great! Guest guest
Thanks so much for all this valuable information, . I appreciate it so much. It is the not knowing that is the most frightening. I was wondering about home care too. That is good to know, since I am alone. Now were you awake during your surgery or were you under and they just put the epidural in for pain management after the surgery? In VA > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dr. Rice's scheduler called me today and my 'ectomy is > > > > > > scheduled for > > > > > > > > February 7 with pre-op testing on February 5. Guest guest
Deb, Thanks so much for sharing your experience too. I am feeling better about this each day! Did you have your surgery at CCF? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dr. Rice's scheduler called me today and my 'ectomy is > > > > > > > scheduled for > > > > > > > > > February 7 with pre-op testing on February 5.
