Joe,

I just had my 'ectomy back in March 2007, and had my j-tube in for a

total of about

7 1/2 weeks from the day of surgery until they removed it, and had no

leakage like you are describing. Once I was back at home after surgery

I was pretty active (within reason as I was recovering) as I have two

young boys at home. I kept the site covered with gauze, to protect it,

and while there was some occasional " ooze " , they had told me there

could be, as that is the bodies natural reaction to having something

foreign in it. However, it was never very much at all (it was actually

less than what I thought it would be) and it was never green or felt

like it was burning me. Have your doctors actually seen your j-tube

site to confirm there is no infection or anything?

Joe,

I have had 2 PEG tubes. No J tubes.

The second tube gave me no problems at all except leakage around the

outside of the tube, causing burning of the skin to the point of

ulceration and hypergranulation.

Wearing, I have forgotten what it's called not Hyperfix, it's the

dressing that looks like thick skin, Duraderm???. Anyway a few days

with that and it fixed it.

But every time they burnt off the granulation tissue they took

biopsies. Just in case.

BUT my first tube was a nightmare.

The Doctor who did it who does a lot of these, he should really go

back to school and learn how to do them properly as far as I am

concerded, made the hole WAY too big. AND PURPOSELY had the inside and

outside flange HARD against each other. So this raw, new stoma had a

wedge in it as well. This of course had to be moved. After a large

dose of Morphine and a pillow over my face (I did that as I was

screaming at the top of my lungs) the PEG Team tried for nearly an

hour to move the outside flange. I can still remember the pain. They

had to get 2 pairs of forceps in between a minute gap and pull.

ALSO because of the hole being too big, instead of acid and bile

ending up outside on my skin it went INTERNALLY. So all this burning

fluid was collecting in my peritinium.

I rung the PEG Team one night crying in agony asking " If this was

normal? " I was told yes. IT'S NOT!!!!!

This PEG was removed after 6 months due to the fact it had got a

massive, deep infection in my peritinium and couldn't be healed after

3 weeks in hospital on IV anti-biotics and pain killers etc.

Oh I am cheerful this morning!!

Hi Joe,

I didn't have any leakage from my J-tube. I didn't even keep it covered with gauze, just kept it capped.

Best of luck with your surgery in March.

When the people who had 'ectomies had j-tubes, how many had leakage around the tube. I was told by my MD that because i move around causeing the tube to move the hole has gotten bigger causing this leak. The fluid burns my skin it must be bile and acid combinded or digested tube feed. When it is green I assume it is bile. I am supposed to have the site moved when I have the roux en y in March the doctors are then going to biopsy the skin because it has been burned for over 2 years then healed then burned ect. I don't think anything is there but they are being cautiousJoe

Hello Joe,

I have had a j-tube on two occasions and have not had a leak yet. I had the first one in 1995 following a ruptured oesophagus and it was in for 6 months during which time it moved around a fair bit and i had to have the stitches replaced once ( to hold it in place) but did not have any leaks. The second one i had in after my oesophagectomy and it was in for six weeks and again no leaks.
