Guest guest
, I didn’t have this problem til my gall bladder was taken out. But I know of others on here that have gotten it after surgery!! Seems to be one of the side effects that are common afterward. I feel for ya…I really do cuz I know what it’s like! I take a drink med now everyday so I don’t get it! Guest guest
Don't fret, been there, still there sometimes. I've learned that some days I can eat whatever I want and have no problems, and then I can eat the same thing a day or two later and the dumping happens. The only explanation is our body is trying to adjust. achalasia From: sandraphipps@...Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 13:55:19 +0000Subject: Dumping Question I had 4 oz. of ice cream on several occasions while in the hospitalafter the esophagectomy during the sixth week. Guest guest
I had similar issues after returning home after surgery. I think the fact that our digestive system is pretty emptied out and getting started up again might have more to do with it than anything long term. I'm back to being pretty regular. It's a month after surgery. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi , I've had a lot of grief with dumping syndrome since my esophagectomy six months ago. I still find that I need to take Imodium at least once weekly. Dairy, salads and fruit are very hard to digest. If I drink a glass of milk it comes out as quickly as it went in! My Doctor was not at all surprised when I went to see him a few months ago. It's very common to have difficulties with dairy after an esophagectomy. I am better than I used to be, and I certainly agree that it takes months for your body to adjust. I have milk in my tea, but that's the only time. I can honestly say I haven't tried ice cream since my surgery, but it would most likely affect me the same way. My Doctor and the Pharmacist both recommended Imodium over Pepto Bismal if you need to take it fairly often. Good Luck and also try eating something else along with the ice cream to help absorb the ice cream (if that makes sense) You probably had your ice cream along with your meal in the hospital. achalasia From: sandraphipps@...Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 13:55:19 +0000Subject: Dumping Question I had 4 oz. of ice cream on several occasions while in the hospitalafter the esophagectomy during the sixth week. Guest guest
If you look back through all the wonderful posts from Ed Fitzgerald, probably the first removal patient that posted here often, I think he spoke about this. He said it tapered off, and he learned to adjust over many years. His posts are priceless if you just browse through them. He is still around and checks in her off and on. Guest guest
You are right, . The place we went to serves ice cream that is richer and has more fat. Also, with the ice cream in the hospital, I was eating it with a meal too. I had another incident this evening. Before taking my afternoon nap, I had a 4 oz. fat free yogurt. I went to sleep and sure enough, an accident in bed. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I will try the bananas each morning. Thanks so much,

Guest guest
, It's so hard. I honestly have to say that probably 85% of my frustration after surgery came from just learning to be patient while my body adjusted to food again. It's so hard to be patient with the whole process, especially when one day you can eat something and be fine, and the next day the same food can bother your system. And I barely had any true dumping symptoms. Mine seemed to hit more like stomach (well, I guess intestines really based on the rearrangement of things) pains that would last for about 45 minutes to an hour and then I'd be fine. I have probably only had maybe 8 or so times over the past year where I've actually been stuck on the toilet with diarrhea for a period of time until it passed (sorry to be graphic about it, but if it's happened to you, you know what I am talking about!). But I promise you, that over time it does get better. You learn what to eat and what to avoid, and how to eat and how much to eat. Of course there are times where you do it anyway, or eat too much anyway, and you pay the price and you want to kick yourself when it happens. But it does get better. I think the hardest part in the very beginning is that you feel deprived, especially with the way Dr. Rice does things only because his diet to start eating again feels like it takes forever. But it is really in your best interest to follow it and take it slow. Some tips that I found helped is to avoid foods that are breaded or fried. Also I barely drink anything when I eat, because I find it pushes my food through my system too fast. So usually now I don't even have a drink with meals (strange for an achalasian that is so used to needing tons of liquid to eat - you really have to re-train yourself). If I need a sip of somethng I just grab my husbands drink for a sip or two. Then about 45 minutes after a meal I can drink as much as I want without issues. Again, that takes time to get used to. I eat small snacks all the time. Protein is key, and I find gives me the least trouble. As for your issue with the different ice creams, all I can say is I find that also. I don't know if it has to do with how much dairy/high fat content it has, or what. But there are times when I eat ice cream and I'm fine, and other times it does upset my stomach a bit. Again, that will improve over time. Regular yogurt makes a great snack. I usually have a couple a day - with some granola in it. It seems to be just right size for a good snack and is healthy too. I hope some of this has helped. Again, all I can say is try to stay positive and trust that it will get better over time. A couple months from now you will be amazed at how far you've come with what you eat and how it effects you. Again, part of that is just learning what works for you, and part of it is your system adjusting to the changes it has been through. Be patient and give it time. I know it's hard - I've been through it. It's probably the one thing that really made me question if I had made the right choice by having the surgery. But it does get better. Guest guest
Hey (and everyone else) Mike in VA here - saw all the chat about dumping - it's been over 1 1/2 years since my ectomy and I still have occasional dumping issues. Fatty foods, too much sugary food, or too much liquid too so after eating and the " gurgling " starts then out she comes!!! (sorry for the mental image). Still I've gained back almost 10 lbs of the 46 I lost - unfortunately it's mostly around the middle (again). - I'm curious about the liquid med ( " drink med " ) you mentioned - what are you taking? Just curious as I'd like to give that a try. Other than that - and I still have numb " dead " spots along the right side all is going pretty good. No foods I can't physically eat/swallow and no upset or sour stomach, etc. Hope all is well with everyone. Tonia - how's doing? Hope he's back to normal now. Guest guest
Mike The medicine I take is called Cholestyramine. It’s a powder that helps bind with bile..since I had my gall bladder out a year ago anything I eat comes right back out if I don’t take it. I take a small dose 2 grams so that things don’t go the other direction if you get my drift. Guest guest
Thanks so much . This helps a lot. I am learning not to do certain things. Before I always had to gulp water or liquid when I ate, now it is just the opposite! I am going to start eating more foods with protein and I already eat yogurt at least once a day. I've also found that cottage cheese with pineapple works great. Thanks for all your words of wisdom. I am just afraid of having a dilation, but I think it is just me and the way I am doing things. I am learning with everyone's help. and I spoke for a long time last night and I learned much! Guest guest
: Thanks for the info - I may have to check into that. Usually I don't have too many dumping issues UNLESS: I have too much sugar, too much fatty food, drink with the meal or eat too much. If I do any of those, then the food doesn't stick around too long - usually proceeded by " gurgling " stomach and, shall we say, " gassy " problems. Anything thing that will cut down on some of that activity would help. I'm hoping that it will regulate itself, but it's been a year and a half and it hasn't changed too much. Thanks again - Mike > > > > , > > > > I didn't have this problem til my gall bladder was taken out. But > I know of > > others on here that have gotten it after surgery!! Guest guest
Hi ,I am now nearly 9 months post surgery and got another bout of dumping just last week when Kev and i went out for breakfast. To me it seems that sweetish foods seem to trigger it now, but for a long time it was just about anything. Even now i can't have a hot drink with a meal, and keep my coffee intake to between meals. But as said sometimes i'm OK and others not. Still i am amazed that the Body has got used to a totally new way of working so quickly after the operation. MY suggestion is sit down and rest if you can when it hits you - if you're home its easy if not good luck. Deb Dumping Question I had 4 oz. of ice cream on several occasions while in the hospital after the esophagectomy during the sixth week.
