Guest guest
This is probably going to sound like a very familar story... many years suffering, treated for reflux or gall problems after gall bladder removal, nothing worked for reflux...many, many doctors and tests before one finally diagnosed Achalasia. Had surgery April 2006 (Heller Myotomy w/partial Fundoplication. Great results from surgery, can actually sleep laying down (first time in years). Still have little issue laying on left side. The occasional muscle spasm/chest pain is treated with Diltiazem, somewhat relieves it, but.. really upsetting to get this pain in the middle of the night. I drink ice water, eat crackers, try and relieve spasms. I must have water with every meal to wash food down. As far as why we get Achalasia.. mine started immediately after surgery to remove gall bladder in November 1995 (maybe surgeon nicked/damaged Vagas Nerve?).. worsened progressively until, like many on this site, I had to throw up food every meal and finally became completely blocked..couldn't swallow water, even my own saliva. I unfortunately, didn't have the weight loss! I seem to be better in the mornings than in the evenings (for swallowing/getting food down). The spasms/chest pain is a real issue/problem dealing with it!
