I do not have burning with acid, but every few months my acid goes up into my mouth and I breathe it into my lungs. I did just that the other night and nearly drowned. I had to use an inhaler and was coughing for a long time. Ugh! Marta

Guest guest
6 months post motomy and now have, for first time in life, refleux, a GI doctor explained why to me this week and wants me on something, non perscription or other Earlier in year I know a lot of you felt it had caused a lot of problems taking stuff. Help? Any advice helpful. This was a new GI, as I don't live where my surgery was done. By the time this doctor got done I was good and depressed again. Boy, when they start explaining etc. its hard to keep a hold on the good. Joanne Palm Desert
Guest guest
Dear Joanne, I'm sorry you are having problems w/ reflux. I'm not sure what you mean by problems taking stuff. I was under the impression that most people did well taking Prevacid-type medication, they didn't really cause trouble. Talk to Sandi, in No CA, as she didn't take them and later they found ulcers, even though she was told to take them. I think most DO take antacid medication, don't they? It is hard to stay cheerful sometimes isn't it? Same old question, are you seeing a gi that is experienced at all w/ achalasia? Is he/she at the top of the command? You may be better off contacting your doctor, even long distance. I think your problem is common, but really, I'm not remembering people having trouble with the antacids after surgery, and they seem to help. Remember gi's can be very discouraging if they aren't familiar w/ achalasia. If you are eating well, then just the pill should help you a lot, I think, from old messages here. If you are eating well, look at that as a HUGE positive. We forget how awful that was months after surgery. Taking a pill every day is a minor issue if you can eat. Hot enough there today? Guest guest
Sandy, Jonnne and all, After I had my initial surgery I had really bad reflux and took Prilosec for two months. That did the trick for me and when I quit taking it I didn't have any more reflux until after I had my dilatation four years later. It was never mentioned to me that I needed to take any anti-reflux medication after I had my dilatation and I never ever felt any problem with reflux.....It was a complete and total surprise! The only reason I knew I had esophageal ulcers was because I went back in for a second dilatation six months later because the first one didn't seem to work and thats when they found the ulcers and put me on medication. I took it for awhile but I am not good at taking medications faithfully and my doctor was upset because I would forget to take it as prescribed...I am really absent-minded..I even put the meds in a pill box but then couldn't remember to take the pill box with me when I would go to work. One pill a day would have been fine, but they wanted me on meds before and after every meal and one of the medications they wanted me on I wouldn't take due to the side affects. I just got tired of the whole thing and decided not to take any more medications, so I am probably not the best one to ask....I am just tired of doctors and prescription drugs and copays. I feel fine now and don't think I am having any problems two years later but I still need to go back in for an endoscopy. As for taking prescription medications, I prefer nutriceuticals to phamaceuticals....Just my own preference... I have added honey to my diet....it has really great anti microbial properties and is supposed to be good for stomach and esophageal ulcers. It couldn't hurt anyway...I happen to like honey and don't want to pay the cost for prescriptions that I never remember to take. The prescribed dosage for esophageal/ stomach ulcers was to take a small amount of honey on a piece of bread daily in order to get it down to the stomach/bottom of the esophagus or else it gets diluted too quickly. This is the recommendation for a honey in New Zealand which is supposed to have higher healing properties.*** If you are having really sever problems with reflux , I would take some anti-reflux medication along with the honey because honey is supposed to take longer to start the healing process. *** I spent the day with my daughter at work yesterday watching her create organic formulas...She is a research chemist in the cosmetics industry and has a really fun job. She is the one that told me about using honey in my eyes (which works really well) and then I found out it was also good for esophageal ulcers. Anyway, is now on the schedule to have his surgery on May 30th and we had a really nice visit.
