Vinnie,

Hello! My daughter, Tia (age 10) will have her 2 year anniversary in November. She sounds just like you, same surgery, eats well- needs a little water now and then- but is really doing great. And, she is growing and putting on weight.

I recently wrote to her surgeon to see if we needed to schedule an exam, I wrote him because I am wanting to do it during the summer when she is off school rather than in November when she would have to miss school. His response was... If she is swallowing well Im not sure that the barium study is needed but it can be done if you would like.

Would I like to put her through tests?? Heck no!! She has been through enough. But, I would like the peace of mind to know that after two years her esophagus isn't looking any worse. I know there has been much discussion about follow up testing. If there are no symptoms should you have follow up tests? Some say yes, some say no. It would almost be easier to have the surgeon say, "YES, you need to come in."

I have applied for a new job and will make more of a decision once I know if I get it or not. I'm not sure what the new insurance would cover. If I keep my current job, I'd probably see how close to her deductible she is and call to see the cost of the barium swallow. Hate to base something like this on money but because she is doing so well and the doctor is "leaving it up to me", it (cost) does become a factor.

One reason I am leaning towards having her do a barium study is because of a recent trip to ER. She had the flu and could not vomit. She was retching terribly. I'd hate to think that this could have caused some minor damage that with time could become a problem.

Anyways, just wanted to say hang in there. I'm sure having some tests is a good thing and will give you peace of mind that all is well. I also wanted to respond since your story is similar to Tia's. Take care and best wishes.
