Guest guest
Thank you for your quick reply. I am also planning to see Dr.Rice but when I contacted Cleveland Clinic they told me to contact the Digestive Disease center and seek an appointment with a specialist. I think they meant to seek any appointment with a GI first. So now the question is should I seek an appointment with a GI or directly go to Dr.Rice who I think is a surgeon. See I am not sure yet whether I need a second surgery or a third dilation or may be nothing. This board is a tremendous help. Its the only place where I can ask a question without explaining Achalasia first, as if its a term from Mars. One incident happened when I went to emergency the admitting nurse asked me what happened. I said I had a surgery for Achalasia and she had no clue what Achalasia is. Well I am still hoping I do not need a second surgery but I want to visit Cleveland clinic and see what the doctors there have to say. I have a question though. Is it always Dr.Rice who performs the surgery for Achalasia at Cleveland Clinic? Will I have to make a special request if I want Dr.Rice to operate on me, if needed? > > > > Hi, > > > > I am planning to go to cleveland clinic for a second opinion and > possible further treatment if > > needed. Guest guest
Hi, I had a lap heller myotomy and an esophagectomy at The Cleveland Clinic both done by Dr. Rice; he is wonderful. I just got back from there a few weeks ago thinking I would need a dilation; however, I saw Dr. Shay, a GI doctor there first who did a gastric emptying test and said I didn't need the dilation. Dr. Rice agreed. You might want to make your GI appointment at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Shay. I found him very personable and he really knew what he was talking about. Then, if Dr. Shay believes you need something surgery wise, he will send you to Dr. Rice as they work together. Take care. Guest guest
No DR Rice is not the only surgeon who can do surgery for achalasia there.Other people here have used the other DRs as well.I think DR Rice has more experience though as far as numbers. I would call Dr Rice's office and speak to a(his nurse).Tell her your situation and she will tell you what she thinks.I think you need to be seen by him and not just a GI. Only my opinion but if you ask her she will let you know for sure. Its your right to see who you want though.I would go straight for a specialist and surgeon. I know exactly what you mean about the whole achalasia thing. My son is still in school(15) and I have to explain to all his Teachers, staff, his friends, then the Drs locally if we should have to take him in for something , ugh-such a pain. Let m eknow what ya find out. Tonia > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > I am planning to go to cleveland clinic for a second opinion and > > possible further treatment if > > > needed. Guest guest
Thank you Tonia and . These were much needed info. I had meeting with my surgeon today and he still saying its going to get better with time. I am so confused with all different kind of perceptions. Don't know really who to believe. Just trying to be positive and hoping it will all end in a happy note. Thank you all once again. -Ayondeep > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > I am planning to go to cleveland clinic for a second opinion > and > > > possible further treatment if > > > > needed. Guest guest
Just a little update. I had a chat with my GI and he encouraged me to go to cleveland clinic for a second opinion. Although he didn't know about Dr.Rice but when I said that he has more than 300 myotomies to his credit he said its a good choice. According to him my fundoplication might be too tight creating all these problems. He said its always a guess work of a surgeon when he does fundoplication and somebody who has done 300 surgeries for achalasia would know best how tight or loose a fundoplication should be . The next thing I did was to call Dr.Rice's office but it was already 5 ET. I am going to call again first thing monday morning. Does anybody know how long I will have to wait for an appointment with Dr.Rice? I am assuming he must be a very busy surgeon at the same time I hope I won't have to wait for months. -Ayondeep > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > I am planning to go to cleveland clinic for a second opinion > and > > > possible further treatment if > > > > needed. Guest guest
When you call the appointment line or talk to a, tell them you want to be seen fairly quickly. a is very busy and sometimes does not get back to you within a few days. I would think they would schedule your visit in a couple of weeks, depending on Dr. Rice's schedule. Dr. Rice may want you to be seen by Dr. Shay also and additionally Dr. Rice will want to do a lot of testing--barium swallow, manometry, and endoscopy. Be sure and tell them you are from out of town so they can work everything out in a couple of days so you won't have to go back for more testing. If you or your husband for government employees, you can get a government rate at all three for $107--select the InterContinental Hotel inside the hospital, it is definitely the nicest. The suites would be my second choice. Guest guest
Just a little update. I have got an appointment with Dr.Rice on next friday (07/25) and going to cleveland to meet him. I have sent all my medical records and waiting for a call from a. She is indeed very busy all the time and you have to be luck to reach her. She said they will do an assessment based on my records and will decide if I need any more tests or not. I don't know when she will get back to me but I got my tickets anyways as they were getting expensive every day. Lets see what happens next. I hope I made a good decision. -Ayondeep > > hi ayondeep, > > i also had all my records from my previous treatment at georgetown sent to dr. rice.? then they were able to decide that i needed surgery and they scheduled all my tests and surgery at the same time.? i then flew back from uganda to dc and on to cleveland straight away.? so it might be worth checking if they want any of your records even though they redo all the tests.? i was so impressed at how hard they all worked to get me in and the overall quality of treatment at the clinic. > > pam > > > >

He just tells it like it is. I have no problem with him and actually like his personality, but some people don't. The thing you have to remember with him is that he cares deeply for his patients and will settle for nothing but the best. Good luck and glad you got an appointment so quickly. Guest guest
I agree with .Dr Rice is very blunt and to the point. Also-Have all your questions written down you may want to ask cause he talks quick and may get you thrown off topic and atleast you have your questions in front of you. He is a awesome DR with loads of experience.(2 years ago he had done 300+ myotomies). You re going to be in great hands! If I can help at all let me know ok. Guest guest
Good luck to you, . I have always managed to escape the pH test, and I am so glad. I suppose it is like the NG tube we had in the hospital and I hated that. They had to put mine in again after they had removed it. I wish you the best. Let us know the outcome. Guest guest
, Thanks for your wishes. At this testing time this means a lot. I am going there on 25th. Today I talked to a and she said Dr.Rice has scheduled no tests for me at this time. Although they have all the test results, dialation results and operative report from my current drs. Right now I am just curious more than else that what's going to happen next. My esophagus is already dilated a lot and every day passes I feel its getting dilated even more. I hope Dr.Rice has some answers to my woes. Wish you good luck with your test. I hope everything turn out to be ok. -Ayondeep > >> > hi ayondeep,> > > > i also had all my records from my previous treatment at georgetownsent to dr. rice.? > then they were able to decide that i needed surgery and theyscheduled all my tests and > surgery at the same time.? i then flew back from uganda to dc and onto cleveland straight > away.? so it might be worth checking if they want any of yourrecords even though they > redo all the tests.? i was so impressed at how hard they all workedto get me in and the > overall quality of treatment at the clinic.> > > > pam> > > > > > > >

Guest guest
, Hey there! I haven't been doing much posting lately, although I have still been reading most of the posts. I saw your post below that you are going to be in Cleveland to see Dr. Rice. We are heading out there Sunday the 27th and I have my first yearly follow up with him Monday morning as well. He did my 'ectomy back in March of 2007. I know, it's been more than a year for my yearly follow up, but I think originally it was supposed to be a year from when I was given the ok to eat again, which was the last time I was at Cleveland and was the very beginning of May of '07. His office called me in June to schedule the yearly follow-up, and then with my schedule and vacation in early July, it just worked out to be the end of this month. Anyway, not sure of your timing - we have to be there at 8am, and I think my scope is at 8:30, and then I meet with Dr. Rice at 9:30 and then we are done (hopefully, assuming all goes well and he doesn't want anything else done). As of now it's just the scope, as I have not had any issues to date. I see you are having some problems with acid and will be there until Tuesday. What time do your appointments start on Monday? I'd love to match up and say hello and compare 'ectomy notes. Love, in NY Almost 16 months post-ectomy! > >> > hi ayondeep,> > >> i also had all my records from my previous treatment atgeorgetownsent to dr. rice.? > then they were able to decide that ineeded surgery and theyscheduled all my tests and > surgery at thesame time.? i then flew back from uganda to dc and onto clevelandstraight > away.? so it might be worth checking if they want any ofyourrecords even though they > redo all the tests.? i was so impressedat how hard they all workedto get me in and the > overall quality oftreatment at the clinic.> > > > pam> > > > > > > > [Non-text portionsof this message have been removed]> >> > > > > > > __________________________________________________________> Time for vacation? Guest guest
We will be arriving Sunday afternoon and staying at the Guest House. I am scheduled to be there at 8 also, with a scope whenever he gets there. You know how he is.LOL My cell number is 606-776-0007. I would love to meet up with you also and compare notes. It has been amazing to meet others with this. I talked to Jim, a patient of Rice's that lives in Columbus. He was the one that they did a medical miracle special on. It's just amazing to see what all we have been thru. Give me a call and we'll chat. in KY achalasia@...: tracylb@...: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 02:40:08 +0000Subject: Re: Cleveland clinic info , Hey there!
