Guest guest
I might be wrong, but when you guys talk about spasms, are you talking about that pain in your chest that feels like a heart attack? Just trying to clarify since I'm new on here. Jen
Guest guest
Yes - that is the pain often referred to as 'spasm'. The more technically correct term would be NCCP (Non-cardiac chest pain), but since we're all friends here, we generally use 'spasm' to describe this awful pain. mike in WI From: Crouch <jencrouch@...> Subject: Spasms achalasia Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 8:00 AM I might be wrong, but when you guys talk about spasms, are you talking about that pain in your chest that feels like a heart attack? Guest guest
My GI's Dr's associate was treating an Achalasia patient and ignored a " spasm " . His patient died of a Heart Attack. You can't ignore the spasms. I take 100 mg of Nortriptylin daily to eliminate them. I know many fellow Achalasians who do not recommend this course of treatment and for many this treatment doesn't work. However, it works for me. I have been taking the Nortriptylin for over 20 years with no side effects. I have tried several times to reduce the dosage and/or stop taking the meds. However, the spasms always come back. Re: Spasms Yup! The first couple of times I thought it was a heart attack until they found out it was esphogeal spasms. Now if the spasms get real bad and I end up the emergency room I have to tell the staff it just E spasms but they still hook me up with an EKG. You can't ignore the > spasms. Good point, . I try to persuade people not to assume all their symptoms and pains are related to achalasia. If one can not tell the difference from a heart attach one should talk to their doctor about it and possibly have a heart test. A stress test is generally no big deal and can give a lot of peace of mind. Mine actually turned out to be kind of a big deal for a bit. First the cardiologist was not happy with me that I had not had my heart tested earlier considering the pain I described even though I could give good reason why it didn't seem to be heart related. Then he saw something in the test he didn't like so he stopped it and told me to wait there while he checked something. He left the room for a bit and came back and told me that the nuclear/chemical test lab would squeeze me in right away. So, that day I also had a chemical stress test and was told I probably needed a stint or bypass but that there was a 10% chance it was nothing. They immediately made an appointment for a " heart cath " at their hospital for a few days latter. I was told I would probably end up with a stint at that time. They ran the cath from my leg up to my heart and took the needed pictures and then said " false alarm. " I now have some very comforting pictures of my heart. notan
