HI,

I was transferred to UCDMC monday AM by my doctors. they diagnosed me

with ACHALASIA, but the doctors at ucdmc want to do their own tests to

confirm it.

So tomorrow AM i have a swallowing test and then AN UPPER g.i. AND

POSSIBLY A BALLOON DILATION OF THE LOWER ESOPHAGUS..

Dear ,

Forgive me if you have posted before, but I can't remember you and

couldn't find your name in earlier postings. If you are new, then

welcome. Likely you have been through everything etc.etc. Tell us your

history. If you are newly diagnosed, and you are young and healthy,

although a dialation is one of the main steps, many opt for surgery

first. Have your doctors discussed this with you? A gi can do a

dialation, but only a surgeon can do a myotomy. Dialations can cause

scarring, making surgery somewhat more complicated later. Sometimes

less experienced gi's (experienced in achalasia) like to treat achalasia

with dialations and botox (not usually our fav choice here) and use

surgery as a last resort. There are some indications that surgery first

is better... BUT.... everyone is different and your situation may be

different and you could just WANT TO EAT AND DRINK NOW!!! not wait.

Not knowing your history, I don't know how far you are down the research

trail. Most hospitals do want their own tests done at their own

facility.

I understand the desire for results, and not wanting to delay waiting

for a surgery consultation, as that is what I did about 5 years ago, and

had a dialation first. But within about 6 months the symptoms started

coming back and I had surgery about a year later. That is somewhat a

common path, however it seems like more are opting for surgery first.

Let us know more about you and how you are feeling. Make sure you are

seeing the heads of the departments at . None of their surgeons

are coming to mind, but experience of the gi and the surgeon are the

best indicators of long term success.

Good luck tomorrow. Let us know more.
