Helicobacter pylori and atrial fibrillation: a possible pathogenic link http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1769015 There are some interesting similarities between the reasoning in this article about the cause of AF and articles that discuss the possible causes of A. Here are some quotes from the article, which if you have fallowed some of what I have written about achalasia research it will sound familiar. " This pilot study was proposed after prolonged clinical observations that a high percentage of patients with AF admitted to our cardiology department had gastric problems. " " We soon realised AF and /H pylori/ infection were associated. " " In addition, we report high concentrations of CRP, which confirm the presence of systemic inflammation in patients with AF, which leads us to hypothesise that /H pylori/ infection may be the substrate of this systemic inflammation manifesting in AF. " " /H pylori/ is a very strong bacterium, with features that allow it to cross gastric mucus and to attach to epithelial cells, thereby evading the immune response. " " ...antibodies do not eradicate the infection and may contribute to tissue damage. " (autoimmunity) The key differences here is H pylori instead of some mystery virus and it hides by attaching to epithelial cells instead of hiding in nerve cells. But there are those who have proposed a link between H pylori and achalasia too. Apoptosis and autoimmunity as proposed pathogenetic links between Helicobacter pylori infection and idiopathic achalasia. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15325006 There is some interesting studies related to other topics that have been discussed lately. Role of autoimmune gastritis, Helicobacter pylori and celiac disease in refractory or unexplained iron deficiency anemia. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15921373 H. Pylori, Lymphocytic Gastritis & Colitis http://jccglutenfree.googlepages.com/h.pylori,lymphocyticgastritis & colitis (From, The Gluten File. Celiac disease is associated with just about everything, so it is not surprising that it is associated with H pylori. But then, if the connection is strong, that may make H pylori associated with just about everything.) I find these topics all interesting but I think it is too early in the research to make a lot out of it. notan
