Guest guest
Hey Tonia - I am with the others recommending the seratonin uptake drugs (amitryptaline - same as elevil). I still take the amitryptaline even though I had my E removed. There have been NUMEROUS studies showing GI problems linked with depression and lowered levels of seratonin. My mother suffers from chronic lowered seratonin levels and has been on low-dose prozac for YEARS. In my family, I think it's a genetic thing- pretty much everyone has had bouts of depression and GI issues. I also tried Ativan which really helped if the spasms were at night and I was home. It is a muscle relaxant and anti-spasmotic med but it did make me kind of dopey so I was not able to take it all the time. I know many people are anti-pill and there of course is a stigma surrounding anti-depressants but the way I look at it, I am just supplementing what should be there already. It never completely eliminated my spasms but they were far less frequent and not as severe. Also, have you tried magnesium - as a daily supplement? Being that he is in such a growth spurt, he may not have healthy levels of magnesium - which helps to relax smooth muscle. It probably wouldn't hurt him to try an extra daily supplement. I hope you find answers soon. I know how awful spasms can be and I certainly feel for you as a mom, watching your kid dealing with it. On a side note - what's up with Dr. Rice NOT giving scripts for spasms?? That really surprises me, he has so much experience with A and otherwise really seems to GET it. Keep us posted. - in NC
