Update on my condition

Hi,

I just wanted to send an update. I first wrote the list in April after

experience trouble eating and learning that I had a dilated esophagus (for at

least 4 years). My condition is complicated with a diagnosis of carcinoid

cancer 11 year ago. My entire right lung was removed, my right lung has

expanded, and all my organs have shifted to the right to the point that my

esophagus and heart are all on my right side.

I learned that my E has no peristalsis and is “torturous”, curved and twisted

and even taking an “L” turn at one point. I had a barium study at

/>Temple University Hospital and a consultation with Dr. Richter. He shed a

lot of light on my condition. My lower sphincter doesn’t open normally or fully

and so my diagnosis is “achalasia-like”, not true achalasia, and possibly the

beginnings of achalasia. Since the 6-week period has passed when I could hardly

eat anything I have modified my diet and am avoiding all pills when possible and

as a result have been able to eat well (enough so that I gained back all the

weight I was so happy to lose).

The timed barium swallow that was done at Temple was extremely helpful. It

showed my E emptied completely within 5 minutes and I was able to get the tablet

through. So, for now I will be followed with an annually unless I develop

difficulties. Dr. Richter showed me on the x-ray where he thinks food could get

stuck and gave some tips on how to avoid and handle that (tips I already heard

from you folks) but the visual was very helpful in giving me an understanding of

what is happening.

I will continue to check in with the list periodically. You have been
