It can also feel like when your leg or hand go to sleep. Do you also feel any numbness or itching? Probably not if the pain is deep. I would think that a nerve starting to act up this long after surgery would be kind of odd. If it has been caught in the build up of scar tissue though, perhaps it make sense. Adhesions can be painful for some and they can act up when you become more active. notan
Guest guest
, Eloisa here. I'm the one that was just a bit ahead of you on surgery date. Mine was on 10/7/08. Sounds like we've had a lot of the same symptoms, post op..... " hang up " feeling but eventually food and liquids go through as I've not regurgitated or vomited either. So that's good. I've also had some pain on my left side, near the left incision, where I had the most bruising after surgery....maybe where you've described your pain. In fact, just the other day, I told my husband that I've had this " nagging " pain. I've not considered them sharp pains, except maybe one time.. I did take liquid tylenol and it went away. At this point, I'm not worried and I've not called the doctor. I'm just monitoring. I may just start jotting down when I get the pain and intensity and will call if it gets worse. Let me know what your doctor says. ________________________________ From: tracy21261 <tracy212@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 10:14:10 AM Subject: Pain, burning 5 weeks post myotomy Hi my fellow group members! If there is anywhere I can get an answer I'm sure it is here. I'm so impressed by the knowledge on the board!! well anyway 5 weeks post op Heller with Dor. No vomitting after eating which is good, I still feel it " hang up " which is my clue to stop eating, it seems like eventually it goes through. My main problem is a burning feeling across my upper abdomen ( basically right across the lap incision sites) This is bothersome but I can live with it (I'd rather not but we know we all make compromises! !) what is really bothering is a deep sharp pain to the left side. It seems to get worse with movement or if I try to take a deep breath. I went back to work on monday, it was so bad I had to leave yesterday. Took some liquid Tylenol at lunch did nothing, when i got home around 4:30 took some liquid Roxicet. Hadn't done that since about 5 days post op. Called surgeon, he said it was puzzling, but didn't feel it was urgent. I'm seeing him next week. He did mention something about a nerve possibly.Does this sound familiar to anyone? After reading posts it doesn't seem like I should be having any pain.I am pretty tolerant of pain, but this is scaring me!! Thanks for any input. from Mass
Guest guest
Hi Eloisa, so nice to hear from you!! i'm definitely a little nervous, I should not have pain 5 weeks later.Since surgery I always have the burning feeling right across my abdomen, the sharp deep pain seems to be when I've been moving around, although I get it while seated as well. At my 1st post op I had mentioned these symptoms and he said that was where he did the majority of work, so I figured it was just a time issue. .after reading so many posts from people saying how great they feel after just a couple weeks, I just feel that something is not " right " I'm seeing Doctor on Tuesday. He seems more concerned abouth the swallowing, I've already accepted what that is going to be like, but I'm not willing to accept this pain and burning. I'll let you know what he says!! Thanks ----- Eloisa Herberger wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > , Eloisa here. I'm the one that was just a bit ahead of you on surgery date. Mine was on 10/7/08. Guest guest
, if it's a burning pain, maybe it's acid reflux, as now our chances of getting reflux is greater w/ the myotomy. I will be thinking of you and yes, please keep me posted. I've had slight pains here and there but nothing major....definitely no burning pains. I'm glad you are seeing the doctor. Will it be your surgeon or your GI doc? Eloisa ________________________________ From: " tracy212@... Guest guest
Hi Eloisa, definitely not reflux, that has not been an issue yet. The prevacid has been working. It almost feels like something is " pinched " The burning is right across abdomen along the port sites. I 'm hoping there are not adhesions. I work as a medical assistant in a OB-GYN practice and the docs do Lap surgeries and they don't think this sounds right either. They have been great about working, etc. they tell me to not over do it etc. I called out today, of course have to hear a little attitude from clinical supervisor, just may have to mention it when I go back!! Of course I want to be at work, but after a couple hours of running around I'm miserable! that's when that sharp pain kicks in. God I hate whining, but this is the only place that anyone understands !! Hopefully I get an answer from surgeon on Tuesday! Thanks for listening. ----- Eloisa Herberger wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > , if it's a burning pain, maybe it's acid reflux, as now our chances of getting reflux is greater w/ the myotomy. Guest guest
I have had a few spasms, but not as severe as before surgery. Those were quite painful. The pain I have now is around the Lap area sites, but primarily near my stomach, where most of work was done. I thought I was ready to go back to work, but moving around has increased my pain. I think everyone is different with post op, it seems as though majority do very well. I think I'm just having a minor complication ( I HOPE) Just listen to your body post op and don't over do it. You will do fine!! good luck and keep us posted. we all try to help each other here. I don't think I could have gotten through the past months without this group!! from Mass ----- sanny jordan wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi..i am due for my myotomy early next month...has anyone of us who has undegrone myotmy with wrap not suffered the spasm...what i could get through the past mails is that spasms are quite painful and keep on troubling for even more than 5 weeks post surgery...so do you guys go on work or take rest till 5 weeks or so...pls let me know ... > > Sanjiv : from mumbai > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > , Eloisa here. " hang up " feeling but eventually food and liquids go through as I've not regurgitated or vomited either. So that's good... > > > > > > ____________ _________ _________ __ > > > From: tracy21261 <tracy212comcast (DOT) net> > > > achalasia@grou ps.com > > > Sent: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 10:14:10 AM > > > Subject: Pain, burning 5 weeks post myotomy > > > > > > Hi my fellow group members! Guest guest
No, not necessarily true. The spasms and pain may be long-lasting and not just a temporary surgical side-effect. In refractory cases, where dilatation, myotomy, fundoplication, and calcium channel-blocker/Botocx drugs have all failed, LES hyper-pressure may remain and be long-lasting. Chronic Pain is a likely outcome. If surgery has not worked in the past, what makes it so predictably likely to work without horrendous side-effects in the future? You speak of the 90% group, whose pain may lessen with time after a wrap. Who is there to speak of the residual patients who have had NO success with these traditionally used methods, and who have chronic pain? All these studies concentrate on the first group. Very little is said about the latter group where--and omg, this may me too terrible to contemplate--PAIN MANAGEMENT may be the safest and most efficaciocus treatment approach, offering the fewest risks. Even treatment approaches using OPIOIDS (insert aghast response here). The use of opioid-medication is the standard against which all other pain-relieving elixirs are judged. That is indisputable. And side-effects are minimal when compared to conventional surgery. No one will say that, however, when there's a plethora surgeons and willing, referring GI all too ready to pursue surgical routes, when they may the riskiest endeavors out there. It helps to have all these 'caring' patients who paint the picture of wonderful results achieved through traditional medical methods (i.e, cutting, slicing and thorough body-sculpting). I will say, without hesitation, that the fundoplication wrap made muscle spasm persistent pain WORSE. Post-botox-treatments were completely ineffectual. There, it's been said. > > ..has anyone of us who has undegrone myotmy with wrap not suffered the spasm... > > I didn't have much trouble with spasms before or after surgery. Guest guest
Steve, I'm glad to hear that pain management meds work for you. My husband, with DES, hasn't had any luck with them. Also, when his spasms start and he would need meds the most, he's unable to get them down. By the way, he hasn't had surgery. He consulted with Dr. Rice almost 3 years ago, who told he could do surgery if he wanted it, but he (Dr. Rice) discouraged it. in Michigan > > No, not necessarily true. Guest guest
Hi , actually I have. The office manager insisted and now I know why!! She has been really good, it's my clinical manager that makes an occasional comment. God forbid she has to redo schedule! My 2nd full day back, I left a 1/2 hour early.(I was really hurting!! another issue!!) she had the nerve to take it from my sick time!! I had finally acrued a couple hours back and she couldn't wait to take it. Office manager said they'll be none of that, protected by FMLA. I should have signed up when I was really sick this summer, but I still did not have diagnosis. Thanks for posting, especially for those who may not know that this is available to them. Gotta love this group!!! from Mass ----- ANGELA BAKER wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > tracy- have you signed up for family leave? Guest guest
we live in virginia beach, virginia. awaiting insurance approval so my son can have surgery with dr rice. we have an hmo and they don't want us going out of network. it's so frustrating. all the waiting. and i'm really not sure they are even going to approve the surgery. they approved a doc who has only done 7 myotomies in the last 30 years, I said no thank you. my son is 16 and is 100% tube fed. he can't eat or drink anything. he getting to the end of his rope with all the delays. I have to say he's handled it a lot better than I have. don't let your clinical manager get to you. our clinical manager complainted when I was out this summer when my son was in the hospital, yet she thinks nothing of leaving early if her precious one sneezes. double standard absolutely. at least your office manager is sticking up for you. hope your feeling better so. I'm not real sure what up with the burning, I'll ask some of the surgeons monday and see what their thoughts are and give you a post...angela Re: Pain, burning 5 weeks post myotomy my god soooooooooo true!! and the scary part is the lack of compassion for her staff.
