Dear Don,

It's just a case of weighing it all up. None of us can tell you what you should

do. As you have seen, particularly from Steve, there is no absolute guarantee

with the myotomy surgery. But as they say - if you want a guarantee, buy a

toaster! LOL

Dealing with untreated achalasia is exactly that- finding ways to deal with it.

I understand that mindset because I chose to deal with mine for many years. The

only way that I found any true improvement was to have the myotomy surgery. It

has given me the chance to be a normal healthy weight and to choose to eat good

food instead of the restriced diet I used to be on which consisted to a large

degree of things that you should not eat to excess such as ice cream and

chocolate. It is an absolute joy to be able to eat fruit and vegetables. We as

achalasians, will never be normal eaters. We have to accept that and make some

concessions, particularly with making sure there is always liquid to hand when

eating, not over-eating or eating too late in the day, eating a little more

slowly. In other words, proceeding with a bit of common-sense.

It is up to you to make the right decisions for yourself, but if you are in good

health I would suggest you consider the myotomy. It has made a great big

difference to me and I not only do not regret it, but bless the day that I had

it done. I did it for ME and the people who love me.

Keep in touch with us so that we can help you with your further questions and

thoughts.

And Good Luck,

from Ann (England).

The surgery I was referri g to was the surgery to repair the bulging

disc in my neck, but I did have three dialations back about ten

years ago. The dialations worked at first but didn't last long. I

was just checking in to see if any new treatments have been

discovered or any new tricks that anyone has learned to help cope

with achalasia.

Thanks,

Don in Arkansas
