Guest guest
A number of people have been taking vitamin B complex supplements for their achalasia symptoms. Some of these supplements may have high amount of B6 that can cause nerve damage when used long-term. This is a problem that your even your doctor may not expect or even know about so if you do have problems it may take time before anyone makes the right diagnosis. Doctors often prescribe high does of B6 for PMS, carpal tunnel and other problems. A significant portion of these patients are now being found to have nerve damage due to B6 toxicity. Often 500mg per day is cited as being toxic, but other studies have found damage at much lower levels than that, even as low as 50mg/day. Also, sources often say that the damage is temporary but people are reporting that some of the damage is permanent and recovery can be very long. In the US the upper limit has been set at 100mg/day. I don't know what the recommended limit is now in the UK but at one time the UK was planning on limiting B6 in products to 10mg without a prescription. There is an interesting thread that has been running for a couple of years over at MedHelp. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/2642 It is a real eye opener to see what people have gone through. Be careful with this stuff. Check the amount in your supplements. notan
