Guest guest
Dear All, This is to share my experiences and my views about the use of AYURVEDA in treating people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) DR MRS ANAGHA KULKARNI , INDIA. E mail - dranagha@... I am Ayurvedic physician working in field of Ayurveda from 12 years in Ichalkaranji., INDIA . I have presented papers on AIDS in national and international conferences in India & abroad. What I learned is that we cannot cure HIV/AIDS but we can treat and take care of PLWHA. HIV+ ve patient is managed by the following TRIPLE THERAPY. 1.MEDICATION, 2.YOGA with MEDITATION, 3.DIET (NUTRITION) This TRIPLE THERAPY is cost effective. So Whole family (husband ,wife, children) can easily afford this therapy for longer duration. Cost efficient TRIPLE THERAPY (CTT) helps HIV + ve patient by 1.Maintaining health 2.Reducing chances of opportunistic infections 3.Improving qwality of life and 4.Regaining confidence of life. CTT IS NOT SUBSTITUTE FOR ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY BUT CAN BE USED AS A COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY. More research and data is required in this area. If any body, any institution is interested I am ready to cooperate. HOLISTIC CARE for PLWHAs. In the absence of a vaccine or cure for HIV/AIDS, Care becomes important. ART is advisable not before CD4 count < 200. HIV infection is spreading . In future these all infected persons are going to develop AIDS. AIDS patient suffer various opportunistic infections & can spread epidemics of infectious diseases .. Ayurveda is a philosophy of health care. In Sanskrit, AYU means life and VEDA means knowledge. Ayurveda is a complete system of health for the mind, body and spirit. Using a holistic approach Ayurveda deals with the human system, not in isolation, but integrated with the forces of the Universe to provide a healthy life in harmony with social, ethical, intellectual and spiritual components of life. I have experienced Ayurvedic medicines like 'Chyawanprasha' & 'Bilvavaleha' (ayurvedic propritary medicines) are useful in maintaining health of PLWHAs CHYAVANPRASH is a rejuvenating supplement composed of mainly emblica officinalis , other herbs ( rich in Vit. C, flavinoids, antioxidants ). Helps to relieve stress, increase energy levels & muscle mass, stimulate vital system. BILVAVLEHA - JAM OF Aegle marmelos possesses digestive , anti-spasmodic, antidiarrhoal, antiviral, antihelmintic , anti-inflammatory properties Both formulas given all to improve health conditions with other symptomatic treatments. It helped patients by maintaining health , reducing chances of opportunistic infections, improving qwality of life ,regaining confidence of life. Although, these medicines are not substitute for antiretroviral therapy but can be used as a complementary therapy. Herbal rejuvenators and immunomudulators increase resistance power. Yoga and meditation balance physical and mental state. Proper diet maintain health In present situation holistic comprehensive management by medication ( may be Ayurvedic , herbal or allopathic or from any other health enhancing system), diet and exercise is the best care to reduce chances of OIs by improving and maintaing health in PLWHA. Detail information available in my books 1. A New Horizon in AIDS (1999) Ayurveda (ancient Indian Medicinal Heritage ). 2. Maintainance therapy in HIV/AIDS (1999) (To maintain health of PLWHA ) PS/ A complimentary copy of this Book is available f AIDS INDIA e FORUM members. Dr Mrs Anagha Kulkarni E-mail: dranagha@... Guest guest
I fully agree with Dr. Anagha because current scientific evidence says the same thing. If the nutrition and overall health is maintained the immune response remain stronger for long and protects positive person from various pportunistic infections. Particularly I agree about using chyavanpras. Though being an allopathic practitioner, I read charaksamhita and made chyavanpras myself using all the ingradients mentioned by the charak for making chayavanpras. Particularly using the " siddha " amala. Any intervention that results in overall improvement of health would sure postpone the end events of developing AIDS in HIV positive persons. I encourage aurvedic experts to tie up with a research expert and do some research to creat evidence.
