Gail,

I can relate to what you wrote about people that " recover " . Today was

unusual in that I've had two phone conversations and it's not yet noon.

Usually it's pretty quiet here with no phone ringing. The first call was at

8:30 a.m., it was a return call from a woman who runs a local support group

for CFS. (I would NEVER phone anybody with CFS before noon, but that's just

me.) She talked a bit about herself and said that she had CFS in 1997 but

has now licked it. Her cure was treating heavy metals toxicity and " blood

parasites " . These were diagnosed by her doc (alternative, not an MD) looking

at a " live " blood sample under the microscope. Finally she admitted that she

has good days and not so good days, but that she considers herself as on the

mend. I do plan to attend the support group, so I will be interested to see

what treatment helped so much.

The second phone call was from a sweetheart of an attorney who has agreed to

help me with my LTD claim. (Disability and documenting it is only one piece

of actually getting disability. Factors that aren't usually thought of, such

as who your employer is when you buy the policy makes a difference. People

that have individual policies versus group policies are also much more likely

to have their claim approved.)

The attorney just had to say that he knew magnet therapy was helpful to many,

had I tried it? Had I really given it a shot?

It almost reminds me of when I was pregnant, everyone has a delivery story to

tell. Except those are usually horrifying. Same principle, people just

can't stop themselves from telling you of a sure cure that they know of. I

guess if I didn't feel so crappy I would recognize this as people trying to

be helpful. They don't realize that I've already spent thousands of dollars

on alternative treatments, all the while living with hellish symptoms that

haven't improved appreciably.

<< What you

must be careful of is the people who recover and are convinced that it was

due to something they did. Most in the area did nothing unusual and it just

happened that they were in the low percentages of those that recovered.

Years ago, Redbook magazine ran a story of a woman who attributed her

recovery to a low dose of an anti-depressant!!! That about says it all! >>

Please don't dismiss magnets and other energy products. You may not have

gotten a benefit out of them if they were not applied correctly or in the

right amount, but they have done a lot for me in reducing the agony of my

condition AND help me to get a better night's sleep. It doesn't " cure " me or

even remove ALL of my symptoms, but I sure am functional again. If you use

the right products, I've seen wonderful things happen. Unfortunately, most

of the magnetic products you can buy aren't much better than refrigerator

magnets.

Amen, don't knock any treatment. Raise questions about potential harm (but

not financial harm .. ie cost, only physical issues)...

You see STRESS is a very significant factor in recovery.... and if a placebo

reduces stress ... more power to placebos!!!

Stress is CFS's best friend -- hope is its enemy... and a valid medicine (no

matter what the source of the hope is!)

I've been meaning to post about magnets and this reminded me. A month or so ago

I VERY skeptically tried some medical magnets; bed pad, shoe insoles and discs. I

tried them for about two weeks and

it wasn't until I returned them that I noticed a difference;my eyes didn't burn

in the morning,I was tired for a few hours in the morning and best of all I

could move my neck's range of motion

greatly increased. My mental attitude was better and my mind clearer. Now that

I've returned them the fatigue is back but the improvement in the neck is still

there. Oh also my body temperature

increased to 98.I'm usually about 96.5-97. I have bought the shoe magnets and

when I have the money I'll buy the mattress pad. My doctor tested me for them

with electrodermal testing amd they

showed to be beneficial for me. I'm encouraged that there is something that can

make a difference. My doc mentioned that the neck improvement was probably due

to the magnet helping reduce the

acidic deposits in the tissue. I was interested in trying them after reading of

their antiviral properties at Mark Konlee's site. I think as they can increase

blood flow can help increase oxygen to

the cells. Having said all this I'm not convinced that they'll help everybody

just like everything with this illness.
