As growth factor researcher Dupont, Ph.D., says, " Growth hormone is the gemera; amd grpwtj factpprs are the foor soldiers. " Wow. That was cool. What I meant to write was " Growth hormone is the general and growth factors are the foot soldiers. " Growth factors function like hormones but whereas hormones usually send the long-distance messages, growth factors usually do the local calls. The name " growth factor " is somewhat inaccurate since these proteins don't stimulate growth but possibly inhibits it or promotes cell movement. The growth factor (GF) are strings of peptides, called polypeptides, with each GF possessing several biological functions. If that didn't help - Nevermind. Mrs. Myalgia must go prove to hubby she can't pull weeds. Well, maybe one more thing. Proteins that actually enhance growth are known as growth factors to physiologist, cytokines to cell biologists, interleukins to immunologists etc. So it can get real confusing.
