Thank you for sharing this - so glad you're doing so well!

I've read different things about the ectomy - would like to ask a few questions:

What did they replace the E with - colon?

Is your stomach positioned higher and does this cause pressure, difficulty?

Was there any disfigurement with the procedure - how do they access the e?

Assume it can't be done laporascopically?

Thanks!

Wonder-full!! I don't know you, but have read a number of your old posts, so

you feel like a friend, lol! (The 'nets are a wonderful thang. . . . )

Back in June researching on whatever it was that was happening to me, had gotten

as far as dysmotile esophagus, and some of the " cures " ~~ using a part of the

small intestine as a replacement, or a feeding tube, was creeped out. By the end

of September, when I was actually starving (not quite to death, but close

enough), I was thinking what a blessed relief *either* of those solutions would

be. And had they been suggested then, I would have leaped at the possibility.

And been very grateful.

I think the radiologist was tickled when I recognized that bird's beak. Not me,

so much. . . . However, I think we're all very lucky to be alive *today* and

with the state of medicine where it is: likely many of us would not have made it

a hundred years ago.

So keep enjoying! And check back often: we newbies need to hear the success

stories at ALL levels of this dang " condition " . . . .

God that i have that otherwise i would be loosing weight again. Seeing doc about

it again though.

My 'ectomy anniversary will be 4 years on February 25th. I was just diagnosed

with gastroparesis at The Cleveland Clinic just before Christmas....rough times

That's horrible - so sorry for you. Do they think it could be related to the HM

in blocking nerve transmission to the stomach?

On another note - hope you're taking B12 injections. Also a good antioxidant

source will be key for your nutrition. If you're interested, can give more info

on this.

Because we're likely not getting enough food/nutrients in our system to have a

decent b12 level - and it's very important to a well functioning brain and

nervous system - and effects our mood and energy levels. Having digestive

difficulties (ie achalasia) and on top of that a malfunctioning stomach -

contributes to the deficiency. The conversion process is complicated and we need

just the right amount of acid in our stomachs to convert it for use in our

bodies.

You can google it - there's a ton on info on b12. You can get a script from the

doctor and for around $10 can buy a vial. It's easy to inject yourself - lots of

that on youtube. You can't get too much so you won't overdose. And it does make

you feel better - especially if you're deficient!

I don't see enough on this site about getting the proper nutrition. We all

understandably eat whatever we can get down and that in most cases is not a

nutritious diet. I have that same issue. So...whenever I can I take my

antioxidant juice (can't swallow pills of course) and take the b12 injection. It

makes a huge difference in how I feel and cope with all this.  I'm not claiming

any cures, but have had a much easier time since focusing on these supplements.

Agree: my guess is that this disease produces malnutrition just about across the

board. At least up until we're " working " a bit better, lol! Add gastroparesis,

and it's all back on the board. But shots? Shudder (lol!) I take a Jarrow

labs sublingual B12, cheaper, and works very well. I started several years ago

when I simply needed more energy -- hadn't coupled it to the fact that I was

regurging a great deal of what I was eating.

Ginger, BTW, is very good for the tummy. Several of the tube feeding sites

swear by it. And this:

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400595/Natural-Treatment-for-Gastroparesis.html

Probiotics are also helpful for some. Can't hurt at any rate.

You need B12 injections because once you've had the HM & the ectomy the stomach

can no longer produce this vitamin/folic acid? and you need it to help digest

any food that you eat.

** Actually - they can do a lap ectomy - that's what Dr. Rice typically does but

I went to Dr. Luketich in Pittsburgh and he does a combo lap/thorascopic

approach. My biggest incision was on my back - right side - he goes in between

the ribs. Otherwise, several small lap incisions and a chest tube scar. The down

fall of lap only is that you need an incision in your neck but from what I've

heard - the scar fades quickly.

Oct. 30 2011 was my 4 year post op date. Dr. at Emory in Atlanta did my

surgery. I am doing very well to. I had my surgery with two open incisions,

one on my belly and one on my right side between the ribs. I had a gastric pull

up and they removed 2/3 of my E and 1/4 of my stomach.

Dr. and his team are great. Every time I am up there they are top notch.

I have my yearly check up on Jan 26th. To me Dr. is very down to earth

and really knows his stuff about Achalasia.

When are you going to see him?

Thanks for the info - a top thoracic surgeon in the country highly recommended

him. I haven't made a consult appointment yet. Guess I'm riding this wave hoping

it won't crash again!  I've been doing relatively well over the last 3-4 months

and even put on about 5 pounds - when you're only 98 to start with, that's a lot

on my frame.

I'll probably get in to see him within the next couple of months. That way when

and if I do crash, the preliminaries will be out of the way. But my question is

this - if I have a manometry when I'm not struggling like I used to, will it be

accurate? Won't the LES pressure be less anyway than if I wait for the deluge?

Dr. and his team are great. Every time I am up there they are top notch.

I have my yearly check up on Jan 26th. To me Dr. is very down to earth

and really knows his stuff about Achalasia.

When are you going to see him?

That is a good question. With the way this disease is it might be possible not

to get a complete reading. I think there still would give a reading that would

show there is an issue. I can ask that to him when I see him and I will get

back to you. Where do you live?

Hey everyone - can you believe it? Today is the 4 year anniversary of my ectomy

and life is good!! I've even put on a few pounds again - I am still a healthy

weight but now have to start watching what I eat.

For those of you who don't know me. I have had A since I was about 12 years old

- diagnosed in 1983-ish. Had several dilations - then a heller and Nissen in

1989. did pretty well for awhile but my E had gotten stretched out and baggy so

I went for the ectomy in 2008. Tough time but by 6 months out - very happy with

my results and I couldn't be happier now. I haven't had a spasm in over 4 years

now (cue angels singing!!)

It's been a great 4 years and I would go for the ectomy again in a heartbeat.

Even though I don't post all that often anymore, I am still grateful every day

for this group.

Wish you all the best and Happy Swallowing!!

Hi Kim,

Thanks for the good info. I have heard from many people how important it is to

take B12 but just kind of let it go to the wayside in the past 8 months when I

stopped being able to swallow pills. Instead I opt for chewable vitamins and

couldn't find this one in chewable. I absolutely hate needles so that is not an

option.

Maybe GNC has chewable form?

Many companies put out a sublingual B12. It melts under your tongue.
