Guest guest
Good Luck with the appointment on Tuesday, please let us know how it goes. Do you have pain on swallowing and if so you may need a dilatation which they will do at the same time as an endoscopy. Please have faith in that you will get better. Some take time to get better others get better quickly. Again Good Luck. from the UK ________________________________ From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@...> achalasia Sent: Saturday, January 14, 2012 4:58 AM Subject: Re: HM - Success or failure?  Thanks . My emotions are all over the place right now. I find that with every little setback I get more depressed and wonder how life is going to change from day to day, week to week then year to year. I will be going along ok until I get that little setback, then the emotions take hold. I am sure I am not the only one who has gone through this, and I won't be the last. I find the hardest thing is cooking for my family, then having to make something soft for me. I have lost all interest in cooking for my family, and this upsets me. My doctor's appointment is on Tuesday and that day can't come around quick enough for me! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I had the same result.ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'†'ÃÆ'Æ'ÂÃ\ ƒâ€šÃ‚¢ÃƒÆ'¢â€šÂ¬Ã\ Æ'…¡ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'¢Ã\ ƒÆ’¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'Æ'ââââ‚\ ¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'‚ II went back to my surgeon and was told that 95% of people are helped with a HM, 5% aren't and I was one of those that wasn't.ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'†'ÃÆ'Æ'ÂÃ\ ƒâ€šÃ‚¢ÃƒÆ'¢â€šÂ¬Ã\ Æ'…¡ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'¢Ã\ ƒÆ’¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'Æ'ââââ‚\ ¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'‚ He refereed me to yet another surgeon to talk about the esophagus removal/replacement procedure.ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'†'ÃÆ'Æ'Ãâ€\ šÃ‚¢ÃÆ'¢â€šÂ¬Ã\ ƒÆ’Æ'…¡ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ÂÂ\ ¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'Æ'ââÃ\ ¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'‚ I didn't like the ramifications of > that.ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'†'ÃÆ'Æ'ÂÃâ\ €šÃ‚¢ÃƒÆ'¢â€šÂ¬ÃÆ\ '…¡ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'¢ÃÆ\ ’¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'Æ'âââ€Å\ ¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'‚ The HM surgeon said I might see if dilatation would help me.ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'†'ÃÆ'Æ'ÂÂ\ ¢ÃÆ'¢â€šÂ¬ÃÆ'Ã\ ƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚¦Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¡ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'¢ÃÃ\ ‚¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'Æ'ââ‚Ã\ ‚¬Ã…¡ÃÆ'‚ I went back to my gastro doc and was referred to some doctors in the practice who did a balloon dilatation on me. Guest guest
Hi I have just been reading your posts and I really sympathise. It takes time to come to terms with having this condition and I really relate to how you are feeling right now. I have had bad times over the years and this last year particularly has been one round of surgery after dilatation and then more surgery! Take one day at a time - each day I begin with 'today is a new day'. Be kind to yourself and give yourself time to adjust. Guest guest
Kim/,  I had two dilations last year and the results were not nearly as good as I hoped. There isn't a day that goes by I don't feel the negative effects of A so I am grateful on the days when eating isn't such a chore for me. I can't help but wonder if doing dilation after Hm isn't more effective though because from what I am reading from many others that have done it in that order, it seems to be more effective. I wish I knew! Kim A ________________________________ From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@...> achalasia Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 7:11 PM Subject: Re: HM - Success or failure?  Thanks Kim. It is so confusing, some say the HM works when the dilations don't, and others have dilations when the HM doesn't work! So, I am presuming that most of will end up with both and it doesn't really matter in which order! > > > > I had the same result. II went back to my surgeon and was told that 95% of people are helped with a HM, 5% aren't and I was one of those that wasn't. He refereed me to yet another surgeon to talk about the esophagus removal/replacement procedure. I didn't like the ramifications of that. The HM surgeon said I might see if dilatation would help me. I went back to my gastro doc and was referred to some doctors in the practice who did a balloon dilatation on me. Guest guest
, I totally sympathize with you. I am kinda in the same boat. While dilation helped me the Achalasia takes it's toll on me too in so many ways. My family and friends just don't understand. I can eat a lot of things but not necessarily what I want. I get so tired of going to social functions and watching people eat " normal " food while I try and eat that and I have to try and hide the fact that it comes back up and I have to try and force it back down. I don't sleep well at night and am always tired. And when I do eat I can feel it sitting in my stomache and I get these belly aches. I will admit I am depressed and wish I wasn't but it is hard not to be. Hang in there. I have to constantly remind myself it can be so much worse than what it is. He told me he only had the odd failure and in each case there were reasons for it. This is why I don't understand it! This is taking it's toll on my 3 teenage boys and husband too. We don't entertain anymore because of me....no more friends over for BBQ's etc. We were planning to have a holiday overseas this year, doesn't look like that's going to happen either. I even sat at home and worked on my PC on New Year's Eve while my hubby went out without me. I wasn't comfortable going. This is the first new year we spent apart in the 26 years we have been together. I am now wondering if this condition is going to tear us apart because I can't have the same lifestyle that he wants (catching up with friends over dinner and traveling etc)! Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear your HM was not so successful. Except for omelettes, I have trouble with bread, unless toasted, and cooked vegetables, unless they are cut super small. My last dilation was around 8 weeks ago and my stomach aches are not nearly as bad as they were in the beginning. It is frustrating and stressful but if I had the HM I would be asking him just what you said -how is success measured?? Last year I had 2 dilations, mannometry twice and 3 Esophagrams on top of the countless doctor visits so I know about the empty pocketbooks. My only New Year's goal this year was to not see a single doctor for anything!!!! - I truly hope this either gets better for you or he has some resolution in mind. I have found when I am really srtessed out about things it makes it more difficult to eat, at least for me. Guest guest
Hi Kim, isn't there a limit to the number of dilations? After HM and dilations, what's next? Why would you have the mannometry twice? If you have have it once and they made a diagnosis, I can't see the point of doing another one! > > I am so sorry to hear your HM was not so successful. Guest guest
Ah, Babe! Been thinking about you all day and wondering how it went. Sounds like you are in good hands. Don't think it's possible to " know too much " lol! But I could be wrong -- mine might have been diagnosed a couple of years earlier if I hadn't known so much: e.g., " knew " that I *didn't* have Achalasia. . . . I'd even found the alternative medicine support site, and tried the Vitamin B " cure " because it " couldn't hurt " -- and it did help, just enough that I delayed, again, going to get something real done. . . . And ended up in the cardiac ward with malnutrition. Sometimes we know too much and not enough at the same time, eh? Just a guess, because I, too, know too much: sounds like adhesions, which balloon dilation ought to take care of fairly easily. At least that procedure is a piece of cake compared to the surgery. Prayin' for you. Let us know! xox, > > Saw my surgeon today. Going to have a barium swallow, then probably a dilation. Guest guest
I have been reading lots about B12 and the other B's lately and might try them too. I also should have been diagnosed 2 years earlier then instead of finding the problem they took by gallbladder out. I then wondered why the pain (spasms) were still there! I hope someone somewhere is researching this condition and that one day they might work out what causes it, and how to do a permanent fix! On another note, tonight I was sitting in the car while my boys were at soccer practice. They finished late and I had my camera with me (I always have my camera with me). I took heaps of sunset photos then turned around to put the camera back in the car, then saw a double rainbow behind me!! It was a beautiful sight and am hoping it was a sign that things will get better. Sounds lame I know, but hope is everything right now! > > > > Saw my surgeon today. Guest guest
Hi , I don't think it's lame at all:-) I believe in signs and if it keeps us optimistic all the better! I take B12 and Probiotics and a Centrum chewable vitamin every morning and I know I feel better. I am very energetic and as long as that continues and no-one tells me it's a bad idea I'll keep taking them:-) I forgot, I also take a chewable vitamin C after my Centrum . . . but mostly because I hate the taste of the Centrum and son's Vitamin C is truly a " Delicious Chewable Formula " just like it says on the bottle! Guest guest
I know how you feel. In the search for a correct diagnosis my gallbladder was removed also. When I went back because the problem was still there the doctor looked at me and said " You have me stumped " He sent me to a specialist who put me on medication and said see me in a month. When the meds didn't work I went back and that specialist wasn't with the practice anymore but the doctor I got switched too is very familiar with A. He only sees a few cases a year but he does know how to test for it. Now I have a consult with a good surgeon on January 31st. I can't wait. Hubby is taking the day off from work to go with me as it is a 2 1/2 hour drive from where we live. Hopefully I will have surgery within the next month. S -- Re: HM - Success or failure? Guest guest
,  When I was researching my illness, I read " everything " I could get my hands on, it helps to know because so many doctors can lead you on a wild goose chase. In my case and in the case of so many others, they just don't understand achalasia....until you find surgeons or GI's that actually deal with it. Our illness is specific and needs a specific type of doctor, that is why we keep the information in this forum.  In my case, no vitamin or herb was going to help me swallow, it needed medical intervention. Because I spent years coping with it, I did not realize how sick I was until after my surgery and I could swallow again. Just by knowing all this information you are already a step ahead of the game, you will be okay.....keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!  Julee from Oregon! ________________________________ From: " ravenstorm2008@... Guest guest
Julee, You are so right. You *MUST* find a team (GI & surgeon) who has lots of experience with this condition. Plus, one must do their own research and gather as much info as possible. Doctors today are not very forthcoming with information unless you ask. They seem to rush you in and out the door like cattle. It's a damn shame. I am 4 days out from my HM/Toupet Fundoplication and felling pretty damn good. Recovery " seems " to being coming quickly for me. First and foremost, I am overwhelmed that I can swallow and get things into my stomach without struggling. Although I'm still on a liquid diet for another day or so, I can swallow my large pills and vitamins without any trouble at all. I just have to take it slow -- small quantities 6-7 times a day. Filtering in soft foods in a few days. I may even wait another week. Surgeon made it a point to stick to the diet to avoid forming any scar tissue. Everyone must also keep in mind that we all progress this disease in different ways and that's why some might consider their HM to be failures. I think that the final outcomes are measured by the severity of the condition of ones esophagus pre-surgery and the what the surgeon does. Hopefully for me things move forward in a positive motion ( I am a bit nervous at times after reading some of the posts here). I'll post my progression. I pray for everyone here. Guest guest
Me too . I was finally diagnosed in October and I wish I was handling it better or wish it was easier for me to handle. The staples of my diet are cream of wheat, soup and salad - and anything else easy for me to get down like pasta. Meat is really hard for me so I try and avoid that. I get chest pain frequently when I sleep, up to 5 xs a night so my boyfriend raised my bed last week and I try and eat as early as possible and that seems to have gotten a little better. Since the last 2 dilations, I am concerned with treatment options as well. Is it so wrong to want a bacon cheeseburger??????   lol  Kim A ________________________________ From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@...> achalasia Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2012 5:16 PM Subject: Re: HM - Success or failure?  Gosh , I hope your HM has a better result than mine. I guess you are only 2 weeks out which is early days, but regurging can't be good. Yes, everything for me happened very quickly and the first time I even heard the A word was on August 31 2011. That was a day I will always remember as that was the day my life changed forever. I think the thing that worries me is that there are no guarantees with any of treatments on if or how long they will work. > > > > Thanks Julee, I think because it's been Christmas and summer here it's been hard. Guest guest
Wanting a cheeseburger is normal! My diet consists of hot sloppy weetbix, yogurt, custard, fruit, very soft veggies in cheese sauce, cheese and ritz crackers, scrambled eggs, occasionally a little pasta, chocolate and Sustagen (like Ensure). It's a boring diet having the same things every day. I can't even have everything I mentioned everyday, I can only eat in such small quantities. Every morning when I wake up A is staring me in the face. Every time I eat I am reminded of it. My brother said the me the other day he prefers the Chrohns disease that he has rather than what I have. I think he is right! I bet he isn't reminded of his condition many times a day, every day!! I think that's the worst part, it's literally in our face constantly day and night!!! > > > > > > Thanks Julee, I think because it's been Christmas and summer here it's been hard. Guest guest
I agree, we are reminded of our A with every meal, from the time our feet hit the floor until we go to bed that night. When we go out to eat we look at the menu and don't think " what do I want " but rather, " what do I think I can eat? " I used to love salad, but now relate lettuce to pain, hurts too bad to eat, can't digest. I went to dinner around the holidays with friends. I ordered an entree that would slip down (as always taking most home) and since it came with a salad I ordered a Caesar Salad without the lettuce, the looks on my friends faces were " priceless. " I can eat croutons (toasted bread) and I love them with salad dressing......we change our diets to accommodate our rare adventure with " A. " I wonder how many requests restaurants have for a salad with NO lettuce???? Oh well, it worked for me!! Guest guest
, My first mannometry was to actually diagnos Achalasia. They were going to have me do a 24 hour PH study but I was in such distress that the nurse who performed it ( she does all of them for Froedert Hospital ) called my GI and told him I had Achalasia and would not be able to handle it. The second one was to see how well the graded dilation worked. It went better the second time than the first but that was the most unpleasant test I have ever had!! I am no expert but from what I know about dilation is the more you have there is the potential for perforation or scarring which can cause a stricture. I think some of us scar worse than others but I would think endoscopy can determine that. I am only stage 2 so at this point my doctor said when it is time for another treatment we would have to discuss the best possible option at that time. He is not real excited to do HM yet and either am I. So long as you have a doctor experienced with Achalasia and doing graded pneumatic dilations I would hope they would know what your best options are. Many people seem to have really good luck with dilations after HM. How many dilations have you had so far? Kim A ________________________________ From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@...> achalasia Sent: Monday, January 16, 2012 6:19 PM Subject: Re: HM - Success or failure?  Hi Kim, isn't there a limit to the number of dilations? Guest guest
Don't give up all your social life. While others order food, you can order a milk shake, or drink, something to sip while you socialize. True friends understand and enjoy your company. We need to enjoy our life the best we can!! Isolating yourself will only depress you more. Think of the good...enjoy that slimmer body resulting from less entrees!! I understand.ÃÆ'‚ When they do the balloon they should do some additional diagnostics to make sure they haven't perforated you.ÃÆ'‚ I understand this has occurred in about 1% of the cases. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Good Luck, > > > > > Greg > > > > > Greenwood, IN > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > > > From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@> > > > > > achalasia > > > > > Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 3:52 AM > > > > > Subject: HM - Success or failure? > > > > > > > > > > Just wondering how a HM is measured in terms of success or not? > > > > > > > > > > I am now 8 weeks post HM.ÃÆ'‚ The only food I have had a little success with is pizza ( 1 1/2 pieces slowly with 2 full glasses of water to wash it down)....but I was able to do that pre HM.ÃÆ'‚ Bread gets stuck and so does omelette.ÃÆ'‚ Even soft vegetables are not going down well.ÃÆ'‚ I am wondering if I am one of the unlucky 10% who has had a failure! > > > > > > > > > > My eating is pretty much the same as pre HM, and the last few days my stomach has felt sore and uncomfortable!ÃÆ'‚ I have a follow up appointment with my surgeon Dr Bessel next week, and wonder what questions I need to ask him.ÃÆ'‚ Am wondering where I go from here and whether I went through the whole operation for nothing....except for a big hole in my purse! > > > > > > > > > > (Australia) > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > > > > > > > As a member of this group, you are invited to join the HealthShare Groups community center located at http://healthsharegroups.org.ÃÆ'‚ The community center brings together members from over 1200 disease specific support groups for sharing of information and support. Guest guest
Is lettuce tough for most people with A? Just curious, my husband used to eat salads all the time, but over the holiday when I offered him one he say no way can he eat lettuce any more. in WI ~husband diagnosed with A in 7/08 > > > > > > > > > > Thanks Julee, I think because it's been Christmas and summer here it's been hard. Summer is normally our busy socializing season, with BBQ's by the pool. In winter when we hibernate more and are busy running our boys around to soccer practice and games it won't be quite as difficult. > > > > > Not sure how you put up with it for 15 years without intervention! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Glad to hear that ! Let us know how it goes! Kim A ________________________________ From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@...> achalasia Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 1:02 AM Subject: Re: HM - Success or failure?  Saw my surgeon today. Going to have a barium swallow, then probably a dilation. I have obviously been reading too much on the internet, I knew exactly what he was going to say! It's a worry when we know as much as the doctors! > >  > > Kim A > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: lindsaykite <lindsaykite@> > > achalasia > > Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 2:52 AM > > Subject: HM - Success or failure? > > > > > >  > > Just wondering how a HM is measured in terms of success or not? > > > > I am now 8 weeks post HM.
